    is there any way other than paying to get featured that can bump my gig to first page?

    You can bump your gig every week. When you first created the gig, wait for 7 days then you can re-edit your gig and make some changes. Then there, your gig will be shown on the first page again =) Try to do it again every week. Hope this helps.

    when you first create a gig, it shows up on the first page until other gigs bump it down

    yes... you can bump your gig.. but if you are sure about the conversion you can try featured it
