How do you get people to link to your site. I know that good content will help but what are some other ways?

Pardon me if I am wrong in the understanding of this topic. Linking to your sites is more for the blog or forum where the visitor will leave his footprint in the form of a signature. Other than this, I don’t see any other way of placing the link on the website. The posting of the website’s link of the visitor is usually a result of a comment on a blog or a registration in the forum.
