Would Facebook give Google a run for its money?

With the success and ongoing expansion plans of both Google as a business entity and number one search engine for both PCs and Mobile and Facebook as the biggest Social Media Platform with Billions of active users daily. It's easy to conclude that these 2 Conglomerates are assimilating via acquisition smaller tech companies and will soon be at each other's throats to dominate the world wide web.

I tend to agree with you in some aspects. However, the two are going their own ways, one as a search engine and the other as a social media.

When two businesses have different areas of specialization there is no problem. When they crisscross each other's paths is when problems arise.

Yeah, they are dominating different spheres of the online space. I don't really think that it is going to get to that point where they will have to challenge one another unless it gets to point where one of the company now tries to control what happens with the other sector.

Yes, I believe and I agree with that too. I don't think Facebook and Google will be both interested in their paths. I think Facebook's creator will be just contented to operate his company as the biggest social media platform of all time, while the other one as the biggest search engine platform. Yeah, they have both used each other uses for their other feature but that's only it. I believe they will still be a different platforms offering different services especially for their main goal.

If you haven’t heard yet, Google Plus is closing down for reasons of financial viability which means it is not earning well. My take on the issue is that Google Plus was pretending to be another kind of Facebook. If only Google Plus had gone to a collision course with Facebook then it might have given Facebook a run for its money. People think that Google Plus is only for the professionals so the masses were turned off.

Agreed. Unless they try to cross the line of their specialty and enter the other's territory, I don't see any problem and they can coexist without hurting each other's revenue. Facebook is the king of social media right now if you'll compare its active users to other social media sites and Google is dominating the search engine industry and even the mobile phone industry.

We can't say for sure that they won't collide in the future. Both Facebook and Google seem to be branching out on other niches that they previously have no presence. They both are pursuing AI and VR.

That is a good point indeed and I strongly agree with it. Both Facebook and Google have different specialization so I believe there will be no problems at all. Meanwhile, I believe Google is also into social media, which is called Google+.

Google+ is not doing so fine compared to Facebook. They are just a drop in the ocean. If one of the sites organises a social network and shares revenue then it will really give the other networks a run for their money.

I agree. They are different with their own uses. I don't think there would be a problem between them since there's a big difference between them to consider. But they are both dominating the world wide web and people becomes dependent to them. As long as they don't compete with each by trying to prove who's the best among the rest in the world wide web, there will be no problem between them.

Well, this is true to an extent. It is still clear in my memory the way Facebook tried to buy snap chat few years ago and how it spread across. The thing is that both companies are really dominating the market right now and will definitely get to that point where they are going to enjoy bigger benefits in the near future.

It's a great match-up. Though what's so amazing about Google is that they do their best to compete with all fields of technology that is out in the market today. They are also competing in the cloud computing market space with Amazon and Microsoft. Even with Apple because of Android. They are in a losing battle when it comes to social media since Facebook is the crowd favorite, but there is no denying that they are the behemoth in the search industry.

As of last year, GOBankingRates ranks Google's net worth at over double Facebook's, so I'd say FB has a ways to go if they want to unseat them. As others have mentioned, both companies are operating in different spheres online, so their competition isn't something that's really overlapping a ton right now.

In the end, I'd be surprised if it were Facebook who made the first move to overtake the other, as I think Google is in a better spot structurally and financially to take on another business. However, I don't think that'll happen either.

Facebook is a pretty strong company and is the only company that could give Google problems later on if they ever decide to compete head on with the search engine giant. However, Facebook is in a different line of business from Google and I think that the entity is primarily focusing on what it does best - social media.

Google is practically untouchable in the search engine department as of the moment. But if Facebook decides to test the waters when it comes to search engines, I think they have a chance. Facebook videos are giving Google's Youtube a run for its money. So it is quite possible that they would also give Google a heart attack or two if it decides to go in the search engine business.

I feel like Facebook is just a social media site - albeit a wide reaching one - but Google does so much more. From Google Docs to Google Maps, and the Google Search engine that most of us use each and every day, I don't think Facebook holds a candle to Google!

I don't think Facebook would be able to compete with Google. Facebook at it's core is a social media website and that is what it does best. It can add plenty of features eventually, but they would be limited to its' platform and website only. Just like Google couldn't beat Facebook in the social media field, Facebook can't beat Google in its' area of expertise.

I think facebook is at it's peak right now. But as soon as other social networks come out in the market. You can see that soon those networks will replace the facebook. As of now many people have moved away from the facebook type social networks and staying with the sites which can be good for the promotion of various types. For example dribble type website definitely helps out.

That is absolutely agreeable. There were many established social media networks before that were taken over by Facebook. Vice versa, not closing a possibility that a new social media platform will be taking over Facebook in time.

Yes. only difference being most likely if new social network comes out. Facebook is more likely to acquire it. And they may collect data from that once they start investing into it. So it's better to watch out in that case.

I've always thought that Facebook should create its world away from search engines. Mark Facebook as no-index & no-follow...and build everything in Facebook away from search engines. Facebook is an interesting thing. It has the strongest social website... but it has something else...local. You know, ... that freaking tow truck company with 1000 5-star ratings be wouldn't be possible in Facebook like it is in Google. That crazy amount of people using Facebook would basically, over-time, shape their SERPs essentially becoming more than just a user...a person would be a creator of the internet away from the noise of search engines. Google doesn't always give the best search results. When that happens I go to Facebook and ask actual people... instead of getting what an AI thinks I should see.

I think that Google is no competition for Facebook. Facebook owns Instagram and WhatsApp, two huge social global platforms in terms of communication and social media. Google is the worlds largest search engine , it probably makes alot of money in ad revenue, but what else is it successful at? Google plus is closing so it has been a big flop. Can it run any other company or project successfully? The jury is still out on that one. I put my money on Facebook.

I tend to agree I'm rooting for Facebook and considering its global strenght, slowly but surely it would venture out to collide with Google. What's stopping Facebook from developing it's own search engine? I think it's just a matter of time and I'm a couple of years Facebook would make its move.

I second this. I'm sure Mark Zuckerberg has something up on his sleeve and surprise us all. Diversifying their empire from buying Whatsapp for $19B, Instagram for $1B, Oculus for $2B, who knows what they'll be venturing onto next. I think they are focusing today on AI. IMHO, instead of capitalizing into search, they should build their very own OS and venture into the mobile market.

I concur, there's always two ways to skin a cat, one way is to take Google head on which mark isn't doing. And the second way is to challengeand defeat the integral components of Google by diversifying Facebook and buying / assimilating tech companies which it can grow to challenge and kill off Google's assimilated companies. Until Google becomes weak. Then Facebook could make its move.

Google is still leaps and bounds ahead of Facebook, but I'm sure their employees are not sitting on their hands and doing nothing. Given ample time, I have a feeling they will launch something new that will change the dynamics of the game and may have something to do with robotics and AI.

Though Google has established itself as a very huge company, Facebook has a lot of potential. Given the number of its users everyday. No doubt that it can lead the users to a new field that they will be taking in the future. However as of the moment, Google is still on top and they actually are in two different fields.

I don't see Google and facebook as rivals, instead I see them as partners. Both of these companies have their own market base. Google has tried to launch services that are similar to the ones owned by facebook (compare hangouts with messenger, G+ with facebook), and facebook has also tried to launch services that are related to Google's services (compare facebook advertising with Google Adwords), however, they have never been able to outsmart each other.

I would not have my hopes so high until the recent scandals especially involving facebook are done. There is something with big scandals that makes them drag down even the biggest of the giants in the industry and it would be too early to tell where Facebook will end up.

Like all social media sites, Facebook have had its ups and downs which actually threatened the credibility of the social media as a result of people's fear about the release of their data for political reasons.

This affected people trust in the site and made them doubt if they would ever trust the site. But with how things have been so far, the site is up and running now.

All out honest declare each is that they received funding to stay in shape in business. In firms like Facebook and Google at first was user traction. They lived off the investment til the primary wave of ads and pay per click hit. Before this they were terribly terribly tight with cash till raising a correct seed spherical.

For me, they move in a different sector in the world wide web. They still respect each other's capabilities. Actually, I think they are helping each other through ads and affiliates. As long as one side is contented with what he can provide to the people and try not to really dominate the world wide web, there will be no conflict. But truly both of them are now making people become so dependent on them making them powerful in the world wide web.

Facebook and Google are different in their own ways. Google is a search engine while Facebook is a social media platform. They serve different purposes for their users and both of them are powerful. Although I heard some issues of rivalry between the two, I still don't see any valid reasons behind those speculations.

There was a time when Google and Facebook tried to compete with the former launching a social media network of its own and the latter attempting to get more people to watch videos on Facebook but thing is lots of people who use FB are the same ones who watch youtube videos and use Google to find information on the net. So it's going to be quite hard to get these people to stop using the best search engine because they are on FB n neither would it be possible to dislodge people from FB because they use Google search.

I guess we won't see these two companies competing any time soon. What should worry us though is the possibility of them working together. That would be really bad for everyone.

Well, both these companies are giants in their own fields. one is the most popular search engine and the other one is the most popular social platform in the world. I don't think Facebook will directly ever venture in the exercise of competing against Google in the field of search engines. google is way to ahead for any of its competitors to do that. google tried and failed miserably to create a social platform like google+. I think both Facebook and Google do know about the strengths and weaknesses .of each other and will avoid competing for the same space. I think both these companies must concentrate on the security problems they are facing and safeguard the data 0f their users instead of thinking of competing with each other and loosing out in the long run.

I agree. They'd rather work together than compete. Anyway, they're both very successful at their market niche. So they won't have to worry about ever being negatively affected by others. In fact, Facebook benefits a lot from Google's ads and vice-versa.

In business "money talks", but when we talking regarding this two giants, Facebook and Google i don't see why any of them would try to do this. They both doing very good, financially and any other way. So i guess they could make some business deals as synergy and nothing else. Their two databases are maybe the largest collections of personal and web data in the world so i can see them only as business partners, but not as rivals or similar

Exactly what I feel about the two social networks. They are very good in what they offer to the world and none of them can really phase off each other.

Facebook has a huge fan base of over 2 billion users and Google might have more. Come to look at it, there are so people who don't use Facebook but everyone makes use of Google.

Facebook is a strong platform with a huge audience, but I doubt it can beat Google. Google is like everything, it has all the necessary possible features and holdings attached to it.

....but they're not infallible. There's more than that when people choose. Censorship is a big one I think. Google. There's something to be said about a person going to the Senate to acknowledge and accept responsibility for what had occurred happened. In all honesty, bad people doing bad things intentionally wouldn't volunteer their time to incarcerate themselves.

I was thinking of testing something in the near future. Only use BING and Facebook, not Google search and see how it goes.

The Facebook page for my photography gave my images good exposure and I was offered so many opportunities because of that. I think I was trying to amuse myself by paying $1 per day for the ads on Facebook and the unexpected happened....it actually worked and I had a legit 10,000 supporters on my page after about 6-months doing that. Those are real people and to this very day their still there. A book publishing opportunity, gallery showings, walls were offered to me....I could go on and on but this isn't about me.

The sort of opportunities I wouldn't have gotten otherwise because I'm not a very social person.
For about 13-years prior to any of this I never even really thought about Google and their services because of Google wasn't the preferred search engine in Japan, Yahoo was the search engine of choice and mix was their social media of choice was Mixi. This was around 2010 and I'm not sure of the date but I think Facebook bought Mixi.

The one thing Google has that can be replaced easily is YouTube.

Facebook has Instagram, partners with Bing(MS) and if they just put together one "ok" video service I wouldn't really go back to Google.

Google search isn't that much better than Bing with search but Bing is definitely better with image and video search. In chasing the flavor of the Google update I find that I stress myself out trying to obey the Google law. I'm so close to the Bing-Facebook thing because I really hate chasing that carrot. It's not even a very big carrot either.

Bing, Facebook please build a micro internet 2.0 with all of your assets, noindex/nofollow Googlebot, then send a spam email to the entire world offering everyone a new continent to explore. You could also talk to DuckDuckGo.com about being a part of the new world and integrate Yahoo as well since most of their search results are from Bings search.
