When it comes to SEO, you will always need 4 traits or habits to keep you going, in order to be successful when it comes to the rankings. There are plenty of times when you'll feel down in the dumps and want to quite, but you'll need to pick yourself up and keep on going, because no one will tap you on the back and tell you everything is going to be fine. Actually, if you don't pick yourself up and keep going, you're going to fail and that means no more money is going to come in.
The world of SEO is a difficult one, I should know since I've been in the game since 2003, so you need to push yourself to keep going even when times look tough. If you can't push your own limits, barriers, expectations, goals, etc. you won't last long in the SEO industry and your competitors will watch another person with potential fall and fail.
If you're serious about SEO, or you're just getting into it, you will need to have these 4 things within you:
Knowledge
No one who does SEO well has sat there and said "Well, I already know how to do everything so lets go get #1 rankings!" because they don't know everything. They will be humble enough to tell you that they don't know everything, because we don't work for Google and aren't playing with the algorithm directly lol.
People who stay up late and work long hours are the ones who will learn the most about SEO, and it's not just from reading books. The people willing to put in the time to learn are the same people who will be making more money than the people who just purchased a "method" or "system" that was suppose to make them money online. You'll need to get down and dirty by testing everything you learn on burner websites that you don't care about. You can even test out methods on websites that are in obscure niches, that you don't even own, and watch their rankings go up and down. I don't recommend using other peoples websites, because you're just using them as a guinea pig without their consent, and that's never a good thing. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there that want to save a few bucks a month and will just burn regular mom and pop shop websites to test things
Patience
If you've never done SEO for your website, you're in for a rude awakening about how long it actually takes to get everything moving. I've worked on dozens of campaigns that take 6+ months to start seeing some positive movement, and I know what I'm doing with everything! Imagine if the website owner did the work on their own, it would have taken them years to do the same thing, or they might have even hurt their own rankings lol.
So, if you want to get into SEO and be successful, you need to understand that your work will take a long time to show results, which means you need to have patience
Perseverance
You're never going to do everything 100% right, and when you do fail, you'll need to get through it on your own and push through. If you can persevere through tough times, you will usually come out successful on the other end.
Think about it, if your website gains a penalty, you'll need to do everything you can in order to get the penalty removed and boost your rankings again. If you just drop the website, all of the work invested into it is not gone, and you're not persevering through hard times. If you can overcome all of this, without dropping your website, you will be one of the successful people online eventually
Motivation
Now this isn't exactly what you have inside of you, but it still belongs here, because it helps you do everything from day to day. If you know where to find the best motivation for you, you'll get through hard times and even power through a day that you just didn't want to work lol
I like to listen to motivational videos on YouTube as well as read up on some success stories in my same industry to keep me going when I'm having a bad day. I actually have everything bookmarked so I can get to it right away and get a boost in confidence when I need it lol
In conclusion
If you don't have the knowledge to do the work, the patience to wait for the work to take hold, the perseverance to get through tough times, and you can't motivate yourself to do more work... I don't think you'll make it long in the SEO industry. Now, if you CAN do all of those things or have them within you, I'm sure you'll be successful eventually
