Everyone that has a website, it doesn't matter if you're new or a veteran to them, is always worried about their rankings within the search engines. Well, I'm here to tell you to stop worrying about your rankings so much and focus more on just working for your business. If you are too worried about all of your keywords and where you rank, you will fall behind on other things like actually making a sale, and that's never a good thing. I get it, you want to be ranked on top of each search engine for ever single keyword you're targeting so you bring in a lot of traffic and sales. But what happens if you're too invested in building up your rankings that you forgot about your website itself?
People forget about many things when they are too focused on their rankings, and their overall business suffers because of it. In this discussion I'll go over a few reasons for why you shouldn't worry too much about your rankings and you should just start working, and those reasons are:
Rankings come over time
If you're just starting off, you can wave at your rankings, because they're far away and not getting to you anytime soon. You will never shoot to the top of the rankings because you have to build your authority over time, and that's a process that takes precise planning and strategy. If you invest a ton of time into your rankings, you can actually hurt them, and then you'll really be screwed when it comes to getting free traffic.
If you focus on building up your brand, which will inevitably build some backlinks along the way, you will be working on your SEO at the same time. Your rankings will come naturally over time, so don't worry about it too much unless you're not ranking for anything after 6+ months of building your brand.
You'll make money through other streams, not just the SERPs
People always talk about how they are targeting a specific keyword because they'll make a lot of money from it. What they're doing wrong is setting themselves up for a year of work, with no guarantee that it will get them to rank, and they aren't working on revenue streams that are much quicker.
Don't get me wrong, I do SEO all the time for myself and my clients, but I never forget about my initial revenue streams that bring in sales right away. If you're using PPC campaigns, banner ads, guest posts, etc. you will bring in sales quicker than any rankings within the search engines. Focus on these quick sales methods first, and work on your SEO overtime, because you'll actually make enough money to outsource your SEO work and focus solely on every other sales methods
You can build partnerships
When you're focusing on your SEO too much, you won't be building professional partnerships as much as you could be. Business partnerships go a long way in terms of success, and you'd be amazed at how often a partner could come in and help you out with something such as a coding problem or they could just advertise your business on their own website A partnership is like free advertising, if that's what you're planning on doing with them, and you could share clients between multiple partners and everyone would be more successful overtime.
If you're focusing too much on your SEO, you won't be building your partnerships, and that means you won't have any networking in place for when you need to ask for help or lean on someone in a time of need. You help them out, they help you out, and everyone profits.
You can streamline your support system
Your support system is like a life line for your visitors to contact you through. If they have a problem, they can go through your support system and get it resolved. If they have a questions, they can open a ticket and get an answer to what they were pondering. A great support system isn't just how they visitor can contact you, it's another form of your websites personality, and people will begin to see you as a person and not just a website. If you are focusing too much on SEO, you will fall behind on tickets, which means people will begin to not trust you and they won't come back.
Building a good support system goes a long way, I actually tell people to go with NameCheap solely because of how great their support system is, so I know for sure a good support system keeps people coming back
Your business will be more successful if you focus on it
When you focus on your overall business, and not just your rankings, you will be much more successful overtime. You will eventually get your rankings, but between now and then, you'll be able to make plenty of money to outsource your SEO needs
If you focus on your business, you will know how to optimize your pages for better conversions and you will also know what discounts are going to work and what don't. Overall, if you focus on your business, not just your rankings, you will actually get more traffic in a shorter amount of time. We all know that a lot of targeted traffic is great, even if it's not solely from the search engines
In conclusion
Your rankings will come, so don't worry about them, because if you do worry about them too much you could actually hurt your rankings all together. If you hurt your linking profile, you can kiss your profits goodbye. If you focus on your overall business, your rankings included, you will have a well oiled machine that will be bringing in clients from all over the place, and you can actually make enough to outsource all of the SEO work so you can focus on how your website is working
