Your own expectations could be the reason you're failing

Expectations can actually hurt your business because nothing ever goes as planned.  You may think that a client is going to sign up with you, but then they give you the cold shoulder and never respond to any of your phone calls or emails.  You could think you're going to get 100 sales a day, and you might actually do it for a little while, but then everything fades away and you're stuck back at square one for some reason because you expected to make those 100+ sales every day for the rest of your life.

Expectations and results are completely different.  You can have goals, but don't expect to hit every single one in a short time frame, because that usually doesn't happen.  The only time that WILL happen, is if you set unrealistically small goals that you can achieve every single day but have them set up in a way that you are trying to achieve them over the course of 12 months. 

Entrepreneurs all over the world are killing their own businesses because they have unreal expectations.  You may think you're going to make $1,000,000 a month but then you make just $1,000 and now you're down in the dumps.  You didn't do proper market research and understand that you weren't going to make that 1mil over the course of a month unless you properly build everything over time lol.

In this discussion I'll be going over a few reasons that your expectations could be killing your business, and they are:


Desperate people only get that way because of preconceived expectations
Business is usually a difficult thing to grasp, especially if you're running everything by yourself.  Expecting to set up a business and instantly make enough money to pay all your bills and buy a new house is what kills a lot of startups, because it simply doesn't work like that unless you've acquired some serious financial backing from an angel investor or banking institute. 

Preconceived expectations don't bring you to success, they actually hinder you because you're not hitting all your unwritten goals that are swimming around in your head.  Preconceived expectations lead you you being desperate for a sale, a sign up, or just someone contacting you. 

Instead of expecting everything to come to you or just fall in place, go out and get it.  You need to find all your clients, on your own, and show them why you're the best option out of the hundreds of other companies just like yours.


Some things will have to occur naturally, don't force it
You can't force people to sign up with you for anything, they have to do it naturally, but you can show them why you're the best and influence their decision sort of.  Chasing potential clients will just show you as needy and annoying in their eyes, and how often do you think you can convert one of those people after they don't want to talk with you?

Chasing someone has never been something I liked doing because if they really wanted to sign up with me, they wouldn't take 2 or 3 weeks to do it.  The only time I will sort of "chase" someone is if they ask me to send them reminder emails because they want to sign up on a certain date in order to line up their payments with payroll or when they pay their other bills, which makes perfect sense to me.  I will then send out an email a week beforehand to remind them, then a few days prior, the day of, and if they haven't signed up by then I will send out one last email a few days after and then I'm done.  If they can't take the time to pay an invoice, which is just opening up an email and adding your information, I don't bother with them anymore.  My time is better spent talking with other people who would sign up as soon as the phone hangs up rather than talk with someone for weeks, or months, in order to get them to sign up.

Let everything happen naturally while pushing it in the right direction.  If you chase a lead, you will scare them off, but if you focus on building up the best service or system possible, leads will come in naturally.


You can show your value instead of being desperate and expecting everything
No one wants to just hand over their hard earned money, and you shouldn't be expecting them to either.  If they do want to spend money on something like yours, you need to show them that you have some sort of value over what your competitors are offering.  Technology has always innovated the internet, but one thing stays the same, if you're not providing some sort of value to your customers, they won't sign up with you and the will work with someone else who is.

Expectations can actually cloud your judgement so much that you can actually be successful and not think you are.  This would result in you being depressed that you're only making $5,000 a month when you expected to make $50,000.  You need to know that you're valuable, and you need to show it to your visitors at the same time.  I'm not telling you to tell them how much you're making each month lol, I'm telling you to be a man or woman of the people and help them with whatever you can in order to stand out.  One thing that a lot of successful companies are doing to show their value is they go above an beyond in terms of customer support.  They are doing it so well that people are recommending them based on just one conversation or one ticket completion.  You can also offer value in terms of having the best product with the lowest price tag.  People will begin to notice you and also see that you're not out to gouge their wallets.



In Conclusion
Your expectations could be what is killing your business, so you need to rework what you're doing and know what it can do instead of expecting it to be more successful than it can be.  People who think they're going to make $50,0000 a month, and only make $5,000 a month, are actually the ones who are either going to be out of business sooner than most or push themselves to that 50k a month mark so they do become successful according to their own expectations.  I guess it really depends on the person and what they expect when it comes to being successful, but understand that you need to be realistic when it comes to running a business and don't expect anything to happen... You can show your value instead of being desperate
This is what irks me the most, people selling services far lower than what they are actually worth. I believe this is due to sellers in other countries where a dollar to them is like $100 USD to me. This is a metaphor of course, but some people in other countries price things so low that it ruins the entire marketplace. Now, some of these sellers do not really care and just expect to make a couple bucks here and there but for people who actually EARN A LIVING on the internet need the money they make with the sale of their services. So for them to price things at $1 for a $50 service is a total shock to a marketplace. And this is also where low quality comes in. Surely you can get sales if your service is priced really low but are you sure you can actually deliver QUALITY SERVICES? 90% of the time these low ball sellers can not.

My take on the low prices of services or products in the marketplace is still due to the law of supply and demand. The service is admitted in abundance that freelancers seem to be fighting for the few buyers. That is one reason for the low price. Another is what you stated about the value of money in 3rd world countries. Over here one US dollar can buy me lunch in a fast food outlet. I just don’t know if that amount can also give your hunger the contentment of eating.

Yes, trying not to have unrealistic expectations is a good life practice in general. It is hard to do, but expecting things to happen "your way" and in your time frame rarely does. We are all best off tamping down our expectations, and creating an environment that favors success, but realie it may take time to realize our dreams.

You can work towards getting something but not put a huge pile of your mind on it so that you wouldn't feel broken if something goes wrong. We all know that accidents happens or unforseen circumstances might creep in and ruin things for someone, so too much expectations will definitely hurt more to such individual.

Yes, it would be nice if we could control our own environments and the things that happen to us everytime but sadly, life doesn't usually go according to plan. It can be frustrating.

There is a saying that it's when you have expectations for or on something that you get to be disappointed should such not be forthcoming. So therefore, I practically prefer not to have any expectations on anything even on the work I do, in order not to be heartbroken if things don't work out for me the way I visioned it.

Keeping your expectations realistic and also working to achieve them is what matters most. Don't get too high on yourself - and what you want to accomplish or build? Work towards it. If you don't put in the time - you won't reap the rewards.

The right word is being real about one's expectation.A lot of people aren't realistic about their expectation.It more about bogus expectations with very artificial setup and when once one is all go with this kind of expectations then failure is imminent.

Truth. I think though in some cultures dreaming big is just a part of the way things are done. So when one has lofty expectations - it's really just par for the course. The trick is, don't allow those expectations to way weigh you down in all their glory. You can have them, but don't allow them to dominate your thoughts too often.

Very good choice of topic i must say. It's actually true that the general public practice the act of always setting unrealistic targets or expectations especially when it comes to certain business ventures.

Those are well thought out points I must say too. I like the second point on things occouring naturally. There's little or nothing one can do at this point.

The best way to avoid being prey to such situation in the post above is by being rationale and learning to work with the lowest expectation in a worst case scenario. Limits shouldn't be set too high and a plan B should always be in place for when it all goes south.

In life I don't work with expectations but with what is on ground because if one works with expectation and it doesn't happen that way one might think he or she has turned out a failure and might not even be happy with the little success gotten.yea, entrepreneurs are all killing their selves because of living or earning below expectations.I think they should just work out to make good money than giving one's self HBP over unrealistic expectations.I believe everything and everyone should live one day at a time.

I think setting goals should help one to reach where they want by following steps. I think people expect things they have already experienced. For example when you used a method and it yielded the results you wanted, you will continue using the same method expecting the same results without realizing that you need to treat things the way they come.

Anyway, expectations bring some excitement in life.

I have to admit I suffer from a lot of this also because I tend to imagine the results and I get disappointed when I don't get them and I'm slowly learning to just let the results be what they are instead of expecting them to be what I want them to be. I think that really is the best way to move forward since you are more able to roll with the punches and you have a lot less chance of disappointment which means you will have a lesser chance of becoming demotivated.

I am starting to relate with this. Life can be a bit hard some of the time. And we make decisions based on many small things. I have seen that failing some of the time is easy to relate with the life. And you have to be taking actions to avoid some of those things. And by improving in this way you can be in more of control as well. That's what I have noticed so far with the things around.

I too am guilty of the problem of having way to high expectations, and this can make me be very hard on myself when things do not always pan out like I was hoping that they would. Someone once told me that the way to make the universe laugh is to "make a plan". In other words, there are only so many factors which you can control, and you need to go into every venture, personal or professional, knowing this fact. I think we should also always remember not to take ourselves so seriously all of the time--I know that life is difficult and that we are all working so hard to get ahead and to provide for ourselves and out families; however, we all need to remember to keep a sense of humor and not to get totally consumed by our work expectations.

Having unrealistic expectations and setting unrealistic goals can really crush a person's spirit and discourage them. Yep. Sometimes you can be your own worst enemy.

This is very true and I think it is present in most, if not all, people because we all have a tendency to have high expectations and we all get very disappointed and discouraged when those unrealistic goals and dreams are not met, and this even sometimes makes for a vicious cycle of becoming more and more discouraged. It really is why it's important to remain objective as much as possible so you don't let your emotions get the best of you when times get tough.

There are so many instances like that, that I would say happend in my life. Where in you expect so high but actually did not happen. But even though I experience that kind of thing, there’s always lesson that left on me, that’s you shouldn’t expect too high, It’s better to expect below your expectation because when it happen beyond your expectation you’ll be shocked why it happened.

I have experienced frustrations in making a sale or making other people just to sign up for free newsletters after I presented my business with them. The main reason why I failed to entice people to look into my business is that I was talking to the uninterested audience. No matter how good is your offer, if you are presenting it to wrong people, you could barely make a sale.

I think a lot of people read false statements on the internet on the internet about making thousands of dollars and they think that they are going to make it too. When realistically you're going to make very little money if you make any money at all. It's only once/if you establish your business, you might start making money.

Don’t force it. That’s usually the problem when things don’t go right, you are trying too hard to convince the client. I agree that sometimes things go their own natural way and we cannot do anything with it. So when you feel that it will go the other way contrary to your liking give it another subtle try and then rest your case. Forcing the issue may cause you to lose clients. When we were in Lotte Supermarket in Seoul, South Korea a few months ago, I was turned off by the store attendants who kept on pushing fruits and other food items on my face. That’s a clear case of forcing the client to buy.
