Using a slow internet connection has a way of killing my mood when I try to get things done online. There have been a couple of times where I have been forced to quit a task or source for an alternative internet access. Here in this part of the world where I am, Nigeria to be precise, a major problem we've been plagued with is poor internet connectivity and slow speed. The internet service providers here are mobile operators owned by private individuals and their internet coverage strength is controlled by competition and subscriber database.
Each mobile operator has specific areas where their internet coverage is either strong or weak. In summary, none is a major stakeholder in providing internet service in all locations. I always have to be on an internet bundle with at least two of the mobile operators to be on the safer side. To be honest, having to live this way has not be profitable and not everyone can afford to do this. Also, their internet speed is poor compared to other countries out there. On the average, I get about 0.49 Mbps for download and 0.20 Mbps for upload which is very slow. Watching a High Definition video on YouTube is frustrating with speed like this.
How do you cope with slow internet if you have experienced something similar?

Before you subscribe to any internet service you should find out what their speeds are. If they don't provide those speeds you should speak upThis doesn't happen around here. Even if you do a proper background check on an internet service before you hop on the train, reality will dawn on you when you discover that their services are poor and there is really nothing that you can do about it. ISPs usually get away with their dubious acts and are usually not held accountable. [quote]Before you subscribe to any internet service you should find out what their speeds are. 1. Internet providers sell too much, and can not keep up with the demand. They will oversell their services and over time your internet speeds will decrease to a point where you will have to contact them. Their usual response is that the wiring is old, or that they dont see any speed decrease on their end.
2. To upsell more services, packages or bundles. Some people will pay extra to increase their internet speed. A lot of people are not tech-savvy and have no idea how much speed they really need but they often think they need mid or top grade internet speeds. They would buy these premium packages and the speed will of course lower to a degree that you will have to contact the provider again and get the run around - again!
However, there is a couple of things you can do to help this issue:
1. Install an ad blocker
Advertisements sometimes take forever to load, thus increase page load times. An efficient ad blocker will actually block the source, instead of just hiding the advertisement on the page. I strongly suggest using uBlock Origin. Ad Block Plus use to be my favorite until they sold out, they now allow companies to pay them to whitelist their domains. . totally bull!
2. Utilize your hosts file. On windows you have a hosts file, and you can add entrees into this file. I previously replied on a discussion and include my full hosts file that not only blocked ads, but it also blocked malicious domains too. Once these entrees are in your hosts file, the domains will not load.
3. Uninstall add-ons, extensions, and plug-ins you don't use or have no use for. This will slightly increase page speeds.
4. If you can enter your router account, you should try and see if you can enable parental controls and add the most popular advertising domains such as double clicks, google ads, etc. This is block the domain from loading.
5. Install NoScript to block javascript advertisements, and/or disable flashplayer.
If you need help, feel free to send me a message and I'll help you make your internet more faster. A very fun discussion, and one that not only I can relate to but others as well. Let me start out by saying most internet providers are frauds, and when you initially order a package from an internet provider at first the internet is really fast, and over time you notice a little change in the internet speed. And if you really pay attention, this happens at the end of your contract (if you are on a contract). This is done on purpose, for the following reasons: 1.
