Do you create Subdomains? What do you use them for?

When you have availed of a hosting service, you get to pick your own domain where you will establish your website. You also have the ability to create Subdomains - domains that are within your primary domain. For instance you have seoclerk.com as your primary domain then decide to create a subdomain it will look like this - limberg.seoclerk.com or seoclerk.com/limberg.

These Subdomains could be treated separately as you have to install new CMS like WordPress or install a forum software. My question is, what do you use subdomains for? Do they get the same treatment in the search engines like your primary domain?

I generally use subdomains to place content that is part of my website. For instance, I sell PHP scripts on the marketplace so I would buy a domain to host the script demos. This is so buyers can see how the script functions and it allows them to test the script before purchasing.

Usually, the subdomain is demo.yourwebsite.com, or something similar. Sometimes I would host a blog on a subdomain, like blog.yourwebsite.com to get search engine traffic to my blog then redirect the visitors to the main website. I do not particularly like having a URL such as yourwebsite.com/blog, as I find blog.yourwebsite.com seems more professional from a business standpoint. However, big companies use directories for their blogs and what not so i guess it's an 'each their own' kind of thing. Basically, whatever works best for you.

I mostly create subdomains for my mail sending. For example, using subdomains, we can create additional domain alias. And it can be used for the mail marketing. And this is something many people are into mail marketing are doing. It just comes down to how you are doing it better. It is a good strategy. Also some people make use of the subdomains for the affiliate marketing. And that is another use for redirection.

From what I know of sub domains, the main purpose is to give the site a semblance that you have several sites. I think this is useful for big companies that give their big departments a sub domain. But don’t be mistaken because I am not an authority on this subject. In fact, I still have to create my own site and I would probably create a sub domain if I intend to have a blog and an e-commerce in just 1 domain. Why spend for another domain when you already have one?

True. It's always better to have subdomain for making use of activities which can be done from the same domains subdomain. But the thing is that some people want to keep their mail different from the subdomain. So it means one has to be find the right subdomain in such case to keep things separate.

I usually like to use subdomains to separate the blogging from my main website so for example; if my domain's name would be www.hellothere.com then my subdomain for blogging would be something like blog.hellothere.com

I like separating it because it's nicer and neater. It's less confusing for the readers too. You can easily use the subdomains for anything... blogs, e-commerce, niche specific, language specific and more.

As far as I know, the subdomains don't really affect the SEO unless you'd have some insane amount of them Do you create Subdomains? What do you use them for?

I have never tried to use subdomains before but it is interesting to see what kinds of things they are used for. I have heard the term so it is interesting to see the ways that other people are using them. Many seem to find them to be helpful in terms of using their website.. I think they might be useful in getting the sort of directory information you need to promote your blog.

When I was new to this website business and had just launched my first website. I created subdomains for my website. One was a subdomain for a blog and another was a subdomain for a forum. The basic idea behind having subdomains was I would have a blog within my website where I could say anything an well as a forum where the visitors could say anything. However, promoting subdomains and the main domain became very challenging, thus I dropped the idea of subdomain.

I think many owners of the website do this. I have seen some of the users also create a subdomain from where they have mail.domain.com. This can be one option for those who want subdomains for their use. I have seen some of the users who make use of the subdomains for content. Though it may not always be a good idea to use too many of the subdomains as that can create clutter to manage.

If you want to blog on different topics, having subdomains is very beneficial. Let say your main domain is health. Health is a broad topic. You can create subdomains for niche topics such as herbal healing, mental health etc. Publishing different topics on different subdomains is a good idea.

Agree. I think hubpages tried the same in past I guess. But now they have reverted to creating niche website. And it seems to be working for them. I have seen that it could be possible for making use of the domains and subdomains in many ways. It just gets you to much better place this way. That being said, subdomains are something I am going to try for most of the part though. Because for some functions it works really good.

Since I am on Hubpages, I know about the changes made. They say Google did not treat the subdomains well, therefore, they made niche sites and moved contents to the niche sites. They say the niche sites are doing well. However, I don't see any improvement in my hubpages dashboard

Yes. The new domains worked really well for the hubpages. And they seem to be earning lot better over the years. And they are doing fine with the lot of new authors that are contributing. So it can be really good if you ask me. Subdomains didn't worked but new domains are going good.

It sounds like a good thing, but as you pointed out it sounds like a lot to keep up with. I am not sure how many people will want to go to all the trouble of creating sub domains. I just don't know if it would end up being worth it to most people really.

Hmm..
I used a lot of sub domains to name my vps lol. I also used them for my mail, keeping my client's area or any application that related to my homepage, etc.

I have seen many ppl used subdomain for their blog too. But based on the cases that I found, your main domain will be hit hard if your sub domain cracked or got malware. Any bad things happened to your sub domain affect to your main domain.

If I pushed to have many blogs, I prefer to use different domain than using sub domain. But well, its just me Do you create Subdomains? What do you use them for?

I have $MYINITIALS . $DOMAIN , and I use it like my own personal domain extension. My website is hosted at $MYNAME . $MYINITIALS . $DOMAIN . If I want to create other websites, I can give them their own subdomains too Do you create Subdomains? What do you use them for? (eg: $SITENAME . $MYINITIALS . $DOMAIN) . For a hobbyist this is a great way to host multiple websites without having to buy multiple domain names. It also means, I always get exactly the name I want.

I use subdomains to structure my site better and also for indexing. It helps to have a good site structure if you want to make it big in the Google search ranks. It's one of the most basic SEO schemes.

I have a self-hosted blog but I have been thinking of creating a subdomain that I can use to experiment on a website that I've been working on. I can save some money by doing this instead of subscribing to another hosting plan while the website creation process is still ongoing. Once this is done, I'll buy a domain that is more reflective of the new website and sign up for a new and bigger hosting plan.

Sometimes I created some subdomain under my main domain but to be honest we didn't help more and it needs to be linked on main domain where everyone can know and visit it there.

Also, I think it has better SEO if compare with sub folder in a domain name so you can use this option for your websites as well.

My husband used to be in charge of their office website. It is an e-magazine with a weekly posting of articles. When their office decided to have a forum, they made it a subdomain so it will be directly connected to their main website. And I think using a subdomain for that purpose is a good idea instead of getting another domain for the forum. The e-magazine and the forum are directly related to each other anyway.
