6 ways to help scale up your freelance business

When you're a freelancer, you usually get stuck in a rut each day hammering out orders and running your business.  This means you have limited time when it comes to finding new clients who are searching for your services, expanding your own network with like minded people and even improving your own freelancing jobs.  If you're not scaling your business, you're just waiting for it to die.

Below I'm going to cover the top 6 ways to help scale up your freelancing business

1. Start Branding
Just having a nice looking logo to get shared around isn't exactly what branding is.  Also, if you think that getting it on business cards or flyers is branding, you need to keep thinking.  You'll need to get on social media and other niche related websites and blogs to get the word out about your business.  People always think of branding as getting your image in front of the user, and that's it.  I'm here to tell you that you need to do that as many times as possible and never stop no matter how successful you get lol 6 ways to help scale up your freelance business

2. Networking
Search around Facebook and join groups that are related to what you do.  I'm not saying to join dog related groups if you're selling chew toys, I'm saying to join marketing groups if you are doing any type of marketing to random people in order to make a sale.  You're doing this because you never know who you can help out or who can help you.  I've built plenty of great relationships through groups like this and they have been extremely beneficial since we became friends 6 ways to help scale up your freelance business

3. Outsourcing is always an option
You might have just enough time to do all the work you need to in order to be successful, but outsourcing should always be an option.  You can easily get someone to manage your social media profiles, send all of your reports, do all of your content generation, etc.  This will free up your time and let you focus on other aspects of your business like finding new clients 6 ways to help scale up your freelance business

4. Have your own product
Now this sounds kind of dumb because we're all selling something of our own, sort of.  But how many of us have our own physical product or even an ebook to sell that was written by us?  Not many.  Having your own product will brand you as an authority and you will be able to get a lot more recurring purchases because of it.

5. Recurring Profits
Think of how you can get people signed up to a recurring service so that they will always want to stick with you.  Freelancers that offer services along the lines of social media management are getting recurring payments from subscribers because this is something that will be needed every day of the year in order to stay successful.  SEO and marketing is another good thing to sell but it might take you a lot longer to learn if you're just starting off.

6. Invest in yourself
When it comes to freelance business owners, we're people that usually can handle everything on our own.  In order to keep yourself on top, or get there, you will need to take your profits and push them back into your services.  This not only means to amplify your marketing in order to increase your sales but to make your services even better.

In Conclusion:
You will need to be your own diligent boss when you want to scale up your freelancing business.  If you just rely on the sales to come in through freelancing platforms, you're never going to be successful.  You need to work on your marketing even though the platforms get a massive amount of traffic.  You need to invest in yourself, and I'm not just talking about money, because your will power can carry you a long way in this world 6 ways to help scale up your freelance business

Nice one.... Really informative! I love the number 6.
But most do make mistakes and get tired of investing in themselves or acquiring right tools for their service.
Also, health wise is very necessary!

Just wanted to point out the same thing. I think a lot of people overlook number 6, while it is actually one of the most important things to do. There is not much logic behind it. Invest in your own thing and let it rise. If done right, it will eventually generate more income.

True, however, trial and error is part of the freelance entrepreneurial business in itself. Remember, even if you don't get your return on the original investment, you've gained (or should have) experience in that particular field you invested in to optimize your overall goal of expanding.

Turn every scenario into a profitable investment, no matter what.

I agree that we should also invest in our health. I have noticed the habit of freelancers to be focusing too much on their work that there is no more time for rest and recreation which really affect the health. A vacation once in a while is good investment to refresh the mind and perk up the body. When you go back working, it feels like it is the first day of your job that you are excited and very productive.

Some people may not realize the importance of a logo. They really do that attract people. Glad you put that tip as Number One!

I agree. Proper marketing is the basic and most important part of business promotion. This becomes more important when dealing with online freelancing work.

Spreading the business to all the available online portals is important for a long term business project. Planned and controlled marketing strategy can go a long way in bringing out good results.

I really agree with Branding, I think this is a big part of being able to become successful as a freelancer and yes you need to market yourself as often as you can .
What I also think a Freelancer should do is ask buyers if they like you service and get their feedback on what improvements you can make to better the services that you offer .
Last what I found is that most of buy sales are from recurring buyers so you want to ensure that your honest and you remain honest to everyone who decides to give your service a try .

When it comes to business one of the thing that i greatly advise people to take heed is contacts. Whether it's an online or offline venture knowing who to promote your business to and who to turn to for help is one of the major assets you can have.

Thank you for the great tips again! I certainly need to work hard on each of them, and I am currently working on creating my own products, instead of just creating customized website or applications for clients. I need to think about outsourcing as well, though I would like to save money as a very small business, sometimes there is a need to outsource in order for us to focus and move further.

Great post. I part investing in yourself the most important point of all, well, to me at least. When you keep updating yourself, you will never go out of demand.

Always invest in yourself and learn new skill to meet up with industry standards, dont just spend up all the money you make and leave nothing for personal development, you will just suffer in the end. Again you should always promote your services when ever you see the opportunity, you never know where the next client might be lurking.

I agree with all 6 points but I have something more to say about "have your own product to sell."
What product to sell is the basic question. In order to have a product to sell, you need to produce a product. the product can be a physical good as well as a digital product. Books are easy to produce if you have writing skills, however, it is really hard to sell a book. If you have designing skills, you can sell designs, which earn better than books.
Yes, outsourcing is a better option. You can outsource to create a product and then sell it on your website.

Having your own product is easier said than done. When I was selling ready-to-wear clothes, I was thinking of sourcing out my supplies from myself. Why not have the clothes made by contractors? But that’s not the way a business goes. When you have a supplier that you can trust with products that are good then just push with your marketing. No need to think of having your own product for it may only derail your success.
