Content will always be king when it comes to online marketing, but what other online marketing trends should you be focusing on in 2017? We know that content marketing has always been a big reason any company starts to get noticed. It's never because of a backlink in someones profile that was seen and shared a million times, that's actually laughable Great content will always be one of the best ways, but there are new emerging technologies and methods that you can use in order to help bring in the traffic to your website that you desire.
Basically, the people and businesses who don't see the importance of online marketing in 2017 are just going to get destroyed by their competition in a short amount of time. The world is evolving with new technology, and if you're not using it to market yourself online, you're just admitting defeat. Now I'm not telling you to go out and buy $1,000 worth of SEO software, because that will likely get you banned all over the place since you don't know how to use it. I'm saying that if you don't start now, you will lose to your competitors 9 times out of 10.
If you think about the numbers, there was roughly $60 billion spent on online advertising and marketing in 2015 and if the numbers keep a steady trend, the yearly spend should be closer to $120 billion by 2018. That's double what it was just a few years ago and if that's not a sign that you need to be marketing online, then I don't know what will convince you lol.
I've covered 5 online marketing trends that you may want to pay attention to. These may not be new to you, but someone will read this and realize they are behind in the game.
1. AR & VR Technology
Augmented Reality and Virtual reality for business has never been thought of until the last year or so. With AR you can show people what their house might look like and they can do a live tour before it's even built. With VR there are already some apps that help with digital marketing to show customers your vision which other types of marketing just can't produce.
2. Live Streaming Videos
We are all getting those notifications that "John Doe is now Live" which can get pretty annoying if you ask me. But that means if I'm getting the notification, so is everyone else that person is friends with and that's a marketing stand point which you can't pass up. SnapChat videos is another thing you can't pass up because you never know how many people will watch, will it be 1 or 1,000? Facebook live is actually growing by an astonishing 90% each year, which is insanely good, and this also means that a lot more people are getting use to the going live feature to show off what they're doing in real time. Facebook live is actually getting around 8,000,000,000 views each day and that's a marketing stand point you can't pass up. Too bad we can't get ads on these live streaming videos
Cisco actually is predicting that around 80% of all internet traffic will be going to or coming from videos by the year 2020.
3. Apps for Data
You can use an app like Tableau, Dygraphs, Data hero or Visual.ly to visualize your data, and marketers have been doing this for years. This isn't exactly a brand spanking new trend, but it's something that will start to become more mainstream in the coming year or years so I would pay attention to it
4. Viral Videos
Video marketing isn't going away anytime soon. Viral videos, if you can achieve it, will be what you're targeting when it comes to video marketing. A video can go from 1,000 views to 1,000,000 views overnight if the proper marketing is done to it. Now this is a long shot, so don't think you can hire a company to get you 1,000,000 legitimate views overnight The only downside of video marketing is that it doesn't have a long shelf life. Sure you could target evergreen niches, but your videos will all have timestamps and people will see the video was posted X months or years ago and they will deem it as out of the loop. You'll need to constantly be doing video marketing in order to stay fresh, and you never know, one of your videos may go viral
5. Short Life Content
Facebook stories and Instagram Stories only stick around for 24 hours or so before they are deleted permanently. This doesn't mean that trying to do some form of marketing with these is pointless, it just means you have to do it more often You can do one story every other day and create a buzz about your business or product. You can even do it randomly and offer one time discounts which will increase the buzz about your product and get people in to purchase because there is a sense of urgency. Big time celebrities do this all the time, they'll post something saying there are limited supplies or give a limited time discount and then they sell out their entire stock and make millions. If you can harness your traffic that way, you can be one of the top marketers around
In Conclusion:
Technology is ever evolving and you will have to stay on top of it or get drowned out by all the people who are using it. You can't be that grumpy old man who doesn't like change because it's scary, you need to embrace it and prosper
