Amazon begins to open physical book stores. What is their intention?

Recently I went to visit a friend at his new apartment in Chicago and we decided to go out to dinner with our ladies.  We were walking to the train station and I noticed a book store ran by Amazon.  Now I've been working online for a while and I have never heard about these stores, I thought they were all over the place and I just happened to miss them.  In actuality it seems like Amazon has a few of these stores around the United States and I'm not oblivious lol.  It seems like they have opened stores in Midtown, San Diego, Chicago, Portland, Seattle, and two in Massachusetts.

Some people are outraged as to why Amazon it coming in and trying to open up physical stores when they are already the kings of online retail.  I myself don't mind, but I also don't read many physical books since I do most of my reading online or on a kindle.  People are worried that Amazon is going to come in and take over the book market just like how Walmart will move into an area and take over.  Walmart will come in and set up a location and slowly but surely the mom and pop shops in the area will begin to close because they can't afford to pay their bills due to the lower sales.  Mom and pop shops simply can't compete with fortune 100 companies pricing since they can purchase in extreme bulk which gets them the absoulte best wholesale pricing, which can't be competed with.  This results in the fortune 100 company having the best pricing for something which strangles the local economy until it's dead and the store takes over.   For this reason, people are worried about the Amazon book stores popping up in specific locations and selling what the mom and pop bookstores sell.

Amazons book stores sell their top rated books and magazines in physical forms.  They will not have something on the shelf if it is below 4 stars, mainly because they don't have enough space on their shelves for everything.  If they were to add everything, they would have to lease out a warehouse and only hold 1 of every book lol.  Amazon will show the amount of stars the book has on their marketplace as well as one or two of the best reviews so you can see what people said about the book online.  This is a great selling point and will definitely increase the sales through the store.  Another thing about being a prime member is that when you scan the book you will get shown the discount which is for you, and not people with basic accounts.

If you're an amazon member you can do a simple checkout at the front kiosk and you don't have to set anything else up.  You can simply log in, purchase and then leave with your physical copy of the book in hand.  You don't have to wait for the 2 day shipping even though that's not a long wait lol.  Since there are hundreds of millions of people registered on Amazon, it's unlikely that you don't have an account on their platform.  So purchasing is extremely easy and you don't have to exchange any cash to do so.  Everything is still digital when it comes to payment Amazon begins to open physical book stores. What is their intention?

You can still purchase items for your Kindle through the physical Amazon stores.  They wouldn't take that out of their system just because they now sell physical copies of books in store.  Taking away kindle sales would just be a bad idea, and Amazon saw this.

People are wondering why Amazon is opening up physical stores when so many are closing around them.  Stores like Payless, Macy's and Ralph Lauren are a few of the big names that are getting taken down by online marketplaces in their same niche.  I personally think that Amazon is opening up these physical stores just to get the word out that people can purchase books on their marketplace.  Another reason for opening up these physical stores is because people still like going into a book store and purchasing a physical copy of a book because they are so use to the system.  They go in, pick a book they like, purchase the book and go home to read it.

In Conclusion:
I don't mind seeing these Amazon book stores popping up around the US because I've never had an attachment to any sort of bookstore.  Now there are others out there who are outraged because they are predicting that these stores will take over the book market online and offline.  These Amazon book stores seem to be like a great step forward for Amazon, but the research just isn't there to warrant a mass store opening in a short amount of time.  I'm sure that when Amazon has these first few stores open and getting sales regularly they will either start to close them or branch out into smaller cities.  It's all a matter of time and we don't know the outcome, which is annoying for any business owner lol Amazon begins to open physical book stores. What is their intention?

Amazon will be a world-wide thing in a couple of years. It already started to take over the world by making huge steps into Europe as well as the Middle East.
I'm expecting them to make a move on the biggest Amazon like web-store in Romania in the following 2 years. This will probably result in a takeover by Amazo, which frankly won't be a bad thing because of the current management kind of sucks as customer service.

I don't mind them open physical stores either, especially not bookstores which are totally irrelevant to me. I don't really care where I buy my books from as long as I find what I want and the price is good.

I don't think there is any specific intention here. It is actually nice to have such a store open so you could easily go inside and take a look at what they are offering. Seeing a book on internet and seeing it in the book story isn't the same thing. If you are a bookworm I bet you would love to be able to go to the store instead of buying it over the internet.

I didn't know Amazon has opened physical book stores, though I don't live in United States. I think it's a good thing, as there are still some people do not shop online. Though I have always been reading online and buying books online sometimes, I still like to visit a physical book stores and check out if there are any interesting books to read. I think there is always a place for physical book stores, and I am always happy to find them wherever I go. It's like a relaxing place for me to hang out.

I only knew about the Amazon warehouses were they of course ship items out for delivery. I'm new to an actual Amazon book store, it seems like they are bring competition to barnes and noble, which is fine to me, eventhough it's still easier to just order from Amazon online, some people still shop the old fashion way.

This news is new for me. I did not know that Amazon is intending to open physical book stores. I think this is a good move from Amazon. Amazon not only sales digital and print books, but also is a publisher of digital and print on demand books. Amazon print book publishing program is called createspace. Amazon crespeace is a free book publishing program. I hope Amazon book store will be a good platform to sell books from indi authors.

Interesting article. I was unaware of these physical bookstores by Amazon beginning to pop up. You informed me of something new!

We all know Amazon is seen as one of the largest marketplaces on the internet of all time. So if you ask me, it looks like they're expanding to cover all areas in capturing and satisfying their customers. While simultaneously, reaching out to potentially new customers who are more old-fashioned. Which sounds like a smart marketing decision if you ask me. Like MakeFort said, I don't think they had any specific goal or intention in this move besides convenience. Speaking of that, it works out for the pre-existing customers as well!

Combine that with top quality books and service, Amazon continues to dominate its own lane in the buy/sell marketplace.

I learned something new today. I honestly had no idea that Amazon is starting to open these physical shops. You said they are only open in America so far? I wonder when they will start appearing all over the world... perhaps they first want to test the market out a bit and see how much profit it nets and how interested the customers truly are.

I think it's a very smart move on their part. Why be content with being the largest online retailer if you can expand and cover even more areas? Extremely clever.

Indeed. One day they might show up in Europe as well. Now, that surely is a company that knows how to deal with stuff. They might even surprise us with more, who knows Amazon begins to open physical book stores. What is their intention?

Serving the public who is not yet accustomed to buying online may be one of Amazon's bets. Also, there are people who need to have the product right away, so I think having physical stores is a good bet even in the middle of the digital era.

Amazon is going to open physical book stores? Where was I when that news came out? (???) I think I was listening to the news report about Amazon trying to accept food stamps from online grocery shoppers. The AGP* is really clear. Amazon wants to rule the world!! Amazon begins to open physical book stores. What is their intention?

* AGP = Amazon Game Plan

Well, I can attest to Jeff Bezos being an aggressive marketer and you have to agree, in this modern times, you have to expand and diversify your portfolio if you want to keep leading. May be they foresaw the physical markets taking over their kindle market and why the need to join the physical market. After all they say if you can't beat them, join them. At the rate he is going, it is forecast that he may overtake bill gates as the world's richest man in the coming years.

I actually like where Amazon is going. They probably found an uptick in reader's growing preference to physical books, as we have thought digital is the future (it still is, probably) Readers prefer getting a physical copy as it seems more "authentic". As a reader myself, sometimes I just want to open a good 'ol book for a change of pace in this direction where we are going digitally.

This move makes sense. Amazon is driving many stores out of business so it only makes sense for them to replace them. Their physical stores are very high tech, so It's not like any other physical store. For books it makes sense because you don't have to wait for them to ship. For the other goods it also makes sense because they can get them very cheap because they have built up a large customer base online. For the consumer this is a very good news. However I wonder if they will be able to keep their costs down, while running physical stores. Interesting times!

I had read in the news that Amazon is now the biggest company in the internet. I was really surprised that Google is only number 2. Maybe Amazon is thinking of conquering the world that’s why it is building physical stores in some places. And if the trend continues then it may eclipse all the stores with countless of branches like Walmart and 7-11. And take note that Amazon is dealing with almost all items.

I hope they only hope for the best. And that their intentions are in the best interest of people. So I will be doing some purchases their if they start this initiative.

I also hope that they keep our best interests in mind. Although I haven't seen physical books yet, maybe just in our town. I have a small library at home and keep books at distance separated shelves. If you follow this link you can at least see how I fix them on the walls. So they are solid enough to keep books, provided that you don't hang them high and keep books in a horizontal position.
