13 tips on how to get more followers on Instagram
When I started off on Instagram I was always trying to figure out how to get more followers and likes on my images. It was a tough road and battle trying to not get any penalties from Instagram and lose my account. I did everything the right way and stayed in the right, but sometimes you do just a little too much and Instagram lets you know lol.
When I was on my journey to gain more Instagram followers and likes I did get a slight penalty and couldn't access my account for a few days. I had to basically verify my account in order to get access back, and I didn't even get that little blue "verified" symbol next to my name, but I was glad to get my account back lol.
Anyway, I've written up 14 ways you can obtain more followers and likes on your Instagram profile and pictures
1. Your Time of Posting
You'll need to think of when your audience will be online. If you're super targeted to a specific region then it's going to be pretty easy to figure that out because it will be during the day and not at 2am when not as many people are on. The best times, according to massive amounts of data, the best times to post are around 5pm and 6pm in any timezone. This is due to people getting off of work and wasting a little time on Instagram when they get home. It could also be that people are out of school or waiting for dinner to be done so they're on Instagram browsing for a few minutes.
You have to put burn into your memory that the lifespan of your post is roughly 4 hours. This is due to the fact that everyone will be posting something similar and your potential traffic will probably see another post that isn't yours. If you get into the top 12 pictures for a tag, this will increase the time frame of how long your post will survive. I actually have a picture in the top 12 for a tag but it doesn't get many image posted, so that means there's likely less traffic.
2. Use Hashtags
This really depends on your industry because you will have niche specific tags that you will need to use to pull in your target market. You can test it out by posting and tagging your images and see what has the best results, or you can do a basic search on Google to figure out what the best tags for your niche are lol
Some standard tags, which everyone uses, are:
- #tbt for "Throwback Thursday"
- #instadaily for daily posts
- #photooftheday for your daily pick out of your posts
These are extremely hard to rank for, but if there's a lot of people searching at the time of your post, you could get a lot of followers. It's a good idea to add those tags to all of your posts just to get a chance at that glorious traffic flow lol.
Some people will say not to use up all of your tags on a photo because it can look a little spammy. I say to test it out and see what happens. You'll be able to add 30 tags on each of your posts, this means you can add 5 to your image and 25 in your first comment if you'd like. You can add all 30 to your post if you'd like but I'd be sure to try and separate them from the message you add to each post. When you're posting tags, be sure to add something like "Ignore the tags" then post your tags, or "The tags below help people find my page. Sorry there are so many" and that will show you have a little compassion and people understand why you're adding them
3. Ask questions with your caption
When you're asking a question inside the caption of your post you will increase the amount of likes you get, but you will also increase the amount of comments you get as well because people will answer you
4. Instagram Contest
When you're hosting a contest on Instagram you will be able to create buzz about your account and that's what they end goal always is lol. Contests don't have to be too crazy, you could just do something like a photo share contest which will be that anyone can share a photo of your choice and whoever gets the most likes will receive a prize. I actually don't like doing this, but it does work pretty well in order to increase your own followers. I don't like this method because anyone can game the system by purchasing 1,000 likes for $1 and then win if the next person only has 100 likes on the photo.
5. Share some teasers
You could do this easily with an eCommerce type website since you could show something that isn't for sale on your site just yet, but will be. This will entice people to tag their friends and also comment and like the photo, which is always a great thing.
6. Candid shots
You'll need to treat your Instagram account as a sort of VIP pass for all of your followers to get behind the scenes. This will make them feel like they're getting an inside look at how your company operates and they will feel closer to it. Not everyone wants to see a super edited image, sometimes you just need to post a random image from your phone to make your account not seem so robotic.
You can post pictures of your employees in action, which is just them working. It doesn't matter the size of your business, if you're huge and have 1,000 employees, it's still nice to see at least one of two of them going through their daily operations.
7. Use some Instagram editing apps
When you're using an Instagram editing app you will be able to make your pictures look amazing prior to posting. You can choose between plenty of editing apps out there, but it's up to you which you want to go with. Below are a few that I've read some positive reviews on.
- Instaframe - This app is free and is really cool to use. You are able to make a photo collage using this app and it's pretty easy to get finished.
- Squaready: Instagram Layouter - When you're on Instagram you probably know that you have to crop out a lot of your image if it isn't specifically made for Instagram. This sometimes doesn't work well because you might have to cut out a lot of the best parts of your image. With Squaready you can use the entire picture without having to crop anything, and it's a free app
- Picfx - Now Picfx costs $1.99 but is worth it if you want to get really serious about your posts. This allows you to add 100+ different effects, textures and frames to your images and it will automatically fit so you don't have to crop anything out
- Camera+ - This app is another one that costs money, it's $1.99 and is one of the top editing apps for Instagram. Camera+ can tweak the lighting, brightness, contrast and clarity of your posts.
8. Ask for help
If you want to get on the top of the "Explore" page and you have a good amount of followers, you can simply ask for likes and comments in order to do so. You won't get a ton of action on your posts, but sometimes it's enough to get in the top 12 from just the ones who help out.
9. Use Videos
You can use a video in order to engage with your fans, and it works pretty well
You can use the videos to help show how something works, do a "How To" for a product, a box opening event for your followers and so many other options.
10. Ask for shares
When you do this, you're going to be contacting the InstaCelebrities who have a lot of pull in your niche. I was talking with around 20 people in my niche, all had over 300k followers, and I could get a post for around $15 to $20. This isn't the same for every niche, but it's a good starting point I guess.
Certain niches are more expensive than others, like the fashion or modeling niche where you could pay $500 for a post when the InstaCelebrity has 100k followers.
11. Share the love
One way of doing this is to post pictures of someone using your products in a positive way. This will break the corporate wall and show you as a modest human being. You won't seem like a huge corporate robot and people likely follow you more often because of it.
12. Use Instagram Bios
You can add a link in your bio which will get you some traffic to your website and hopefully a sale. This is also a great thing to utilize when paying InstaCelebrities. You can get your links in their bios for a daily, weekly or monthly price. Again, the niche you're in will determine the amount you will have to pay for the spot.
13. Discovery Mode
If you're trying to promote a new account on Instagram you'll want to begin by following the big InstaCelebrities in your own niche. This will get you your first wave of follows, which are targeted since they already like your competition lol. You can also go through and like images to get follows and likes in return, but this takes a bit longer since you have to go through one more action to do so.
In Conclusion:
Increasing your Instagram followers and likes takes time but you can certainly do it. Just follow the steps I talked about above and you shouldn't have any problems gaining followers
