When it comes to making a sale online, you need to optimize your product descriptions. By optimizing your product descriptions you're increasing the chances to getting top placements for that subpage. Not only will you increase your chances of top rankings but you'll also have a better chance of gaining a new client. It's no secret that people who shop online are always looking through multiple products of the same type before they make a decision. If your product is in front of the due to proper optimization your chances are higher than your competitors on page 2 and 3
1. Your products pages can get ranked in the SERPs.
When attempting to get ranked for certain keywords you'll need to optimize for that specific keyword and possibly one more. You won't get on the first page without some added optimization, which isn't very difficult to do. SERP traffic is much more valuable than a PPC campaign due to the simple fact that you don't have to pay for the traffic coming in. If you're in a difficult niche then each click could cost you a few dollars. Imagine if you were getting 1,000 visitors a day for free, if it were a PPC campaign you could pay thousands each day just to acquire that many clicks.
You'll need to avoid duplicate content penalties since Google really doesn't like seeing the same content all over the place. Now some people will say that if you have the same content on multiple pages of your own website you'll get a penalty, but you should also avoid copying content from other websites and pasting it to your own. Write up your own product descriptions and you'll notice a little more love from Google.
If you're running a website that is either an affiliate site or drop shipping site, you'll need to edit the content as much as possible to be seen as unique. You won't want to have all the same content as the dozens, hundreds or thousands of other sellers because you'll never get ranked and start seeing an immense amount of traffic coming in. If you're able to edit your own pages you're increasing the chances of ranking above the other sellers and possibly the original seller who has the item for sale.
2. You will increase the chances of your traffic making a purchase
If you've every uploaded products from a manufacturers website you will quickly figure out that the descriptions are extremely basic and probably won't convert well. If you write up a well worded product description it will help you increase the chances of your traffic making a sale. Now there are plenty of factors that come into your sales, but this is one of the main ones you need to consider.
You can offer much more information than your competition and that's what a lot of potential buyers are looking for. If you can answer questions before they're asked, a person will be more willing to purchase from you in the end. This is because they won't have to look all over the internet in order to get all the answers to their questions, they can just come to your website
If your items can't have a price change, which makes you super competitive with everyone else, you will need to write up unique descriptions to everything. Write them in your own way and people will see you as a more trusted source for the item rather than the 10 other websites they saw the same content on.
3. Increasing your brand.
If you're selling multiple products from various vendors you will likely have many different types of writing on your website. You will also notice certain grammatical mistakes on one page but on the next it's not there. To avoid this you will need to write up unique descriptions for each of your products making them your own and in your own words.
When writing your own descriptions you will be able to carry over your words and style to each item on your site. Your traffic will notice this and be more willing to purchase because you're carrying your branding across your website. It won't seem like you have 25 different writers putting up listings like how you will see it on Ebay and Amazon how they all have different types of descriptions for very similar, or the same shirt designs and products.
This type of writing does take an exponential amount of time, so I would suggest not trying to get it all done in a single day or week depending on how many items you're selling on your website. The most positive thing I can tell you is that by writing all of this yourself you will be branding your pages along the way. Get your keywords in there as well as your domain name and you'll notice a good amount of keywords jumping for your brand.
In Conclusion:
Writing up your own product descriptions and not using someone elses or the manufacturers description will make you stand out from the crowd. You won't be seen as the other 10 websites your traffic may have been on and you will be giving them genuine and unique content. Answer their questions before they ask and they will come back time and time again

Descriptions for your product, in my opinion, is a "less is more" type thing. Don't get me wrong, products with lengthy descriptions give more detail, sense, and feeling as to what I may buy. However, I feel after too many words, you begin to lose the customer by trying to sound fancy, rather than cutting clear to the point. Take clothing as an example, a winning method for me is quality professional photography with a simple, clear-cut description on what the product is, the uniqueness, and why it's in style for this season.
