When it comes to rankings, we all know that it's different for each website. When ranking for local keywords it can be a completely different process from one SEO company to the next, but they all have similar ideas. I've had plenty of clients who are targeting local keywords and my process may, or may not, be the same as other SEO service providers. The methods I use are pretty basic when it comes to registration and linking, but it works well for most niches 
Citations:
When it comes to finding a business online the person will usually fall upon a citation website. If you don't know what a citation website is, let me fill you in! A citation is basically all of your business information listed on a website that is not yours. A good example of a popular citation website would be yellowpages. You register an account and add your business info to your profile and it stays there as a page on their website which references yours.
Citation pages are great when you can get your information on all of the top ones, but that's not all you have to do. When you're setting up your order you will want to target keywords that are only your business name. This won't work if you're targeting your main keywords because the page isn't related to your keyword, it's related to your business Enter all of your citation pages and submit the order. Also, there is no guarantee that this will work and send traffic, but it does help in the overall campaign.
Google My Business
When it comes to getting traffic right from Google the easy way, you will want to play around with Google My Business here: https://www.google.com/business/
After you register and set up your page you will begin to show up on the maps page when people are searching for something they want similar to your business. If you're in the "Bar and Grill" niche you will likely show up for someone who types in "Restaurant" to google maps because they are hungry. They will hover over the pin in the map which is yours and see all the reviews and pictures to determine whether they want to dine with you while having a few beers if they'd like. Showing up on Google maps will increase your local traffic a good amount
This is like the ultimate citation page for your business that will show up directly on the Google results and send you traffic. For example, if you were an SEO company in San Antonio you would likely pop up on the right side of the listings for "San Antonio SEO Company" if you were one of the best reviewed companies out there. There is no guarantee that you will show up, but why pass up the chance
Backlinking
When you're doing a local SEO campaign you will still need general backlinks from various places. You'll still need to do an extensive SEO campaign and add in all your high quality links which are also niche related. You obviously won't want a backlink from a computer repair company's website if you're selling hats on your own website since these 2 sites are not related. Focus on a high quality campaign and you, or your client, will be much happier when the traffic comes in quicker than you estimated
You can hire plenty of high quality freelancers right here on SEOclerks.com but be sure to find the right one for you. A lot of service providers will offer great campaigns, but only a few will take the extra step and make the campaign locally optimized. Contact the seller and give them your details prior to paying them. They will usually let you know if they can help you out, but be sure to ask them how long each campaign takes. Usually it will take 3+ campaigns to see a positive rank increase and some traffic coming in, so just keep that in mind
In Conclusion:
It's not too difficult to start ranking for local keywords and getting people in your business to generate more cash flow, but it's not the same as a general SEO campaign. You will need to focus on niche related links as well as local citations aimed at your site. Get on Google My Business and you will most definitely get a little more traffic.
