SEO companies that won't compromise aren't the ones for you.
I'm sure there are some SEO companies out there reading this thinking I'm a jerk, but that's their opinion lol. I run an SEO company and I think we do it pretty well and our customers love us for one simple thing... We Work With Them!!! We have set prices and if they're hesitant to sign up due to the prices being high, we will always work with them so they're successful. If they can't afford to pay $500+ a month for our basic plan we will talk it over via email or phone call and figure out exactly what they need. I'll do an analysis of what I think they need and go over it with them and tell them if I can reduce the price or if I can't, but usually I can.
So why would these uncompromising companies not be for me?
Well if the company isn't willing to move around their services in order to work with you, it means one of two things.
- They don't really see you as a client, they actually see you as a monthly payment. Newer SEO companies or SEO companies in India (sorry, but it's true) will usually be pretty firm when it comes to pricing because they want to make as much money as possible. What they don't think of is that by not compromising with their clients they are actually losing money lol
- The service isn't actually theirs and they cannot reduce the pricing for it. A lot of SEO companies are started because they can outsource the work to a real company. I have resellers who do this all the time and act as if the service is their own, until it comes to compromising with the pricing. Now I will work with my resellers, but sometimes it doesn't work out because I can't charge $50 for a $500 service lol. Finding a reseller isn't a bad thing because you won't actually know you're working with a middle man, but if the primary company like mine is the source, you'll usually have a good time
What if I do choose a company that wouldn't compromise even a little?
Well that's completely up to you and what you feel is best for your website. Some companies that don't compromise don't do it simply because you're talking to a sales rep and not someone who is in charge that can make these kinds of decisions. If the company is working with you to build an SEO plan, don't expect them to haggle on the pricing. They have to make money and if you're only going to pay a few bucks for something that takes them a month to do, you're going to be denied. Now if the company isn't compromising even a little and not trying to configure a package for your website it means they have a set of links that they are going to build for every client, and that won't help you at all. Each client they have will have the same links pointed at their website and I can guarantee you that they won't all be niche specific lol.
You have to use your own intuition when choosing an SEO company. You should ALWAYS contact them via email, phone, video chat, skype, smoke signals, carrier pigeon, etc. and if they don't respond quickly then they aren't the one for you. If you're reaching out to them and they don't want to take the time to contact you back, then they either don't respond often or they are unorganized.
In Conclusion:
You have to use your own intuition when it comes to choosing an SEO company. Usually you can get a pretty good idea of what kind of company you're talking to if they respond quickly and how they respond. If it's a detailed response in a short amount of time, then they're probably punctual and are on top of things with everything that has to do with their business. If the company doesn't respond for 2 weeks then you should just move along to the next one lol. Try to negotiate with them to see what you can get for a reasonable price if you don't have a big enough budget. The good companies where the decision makers are performing the act of actually getting to know their clients will be the best ones because they will treat you like a friend... usually.

For example, I will ask if they are implementing meta keywords because I've read those can help. If they respond yes just to please me well I'm out the door, if they respond yes because they're stupid, evidently I'm out the door.
I think it is important to play a little game as a client, at least at first, to figure out what they are made from before jumping into business with them. I personally, if I ever was a client, I would learn the basics of SEO and ask them some like 5 question or something to figure out how good are they in terms of SEO and how far are they willing to go to please me on certain subjects.
