Fellow freelancers and content creators.

Most of us would say that duplicate content is a big "no-no" in terms of rankings.. Right?

I bet that most of us wouldn't sell the same article twice either.. Right?

That being said, we obviously sell our ebooks and reports as many times we can. - And that's never considered to be duplicate content.. Right?

However, if you have a successful blog or website, and you make money from the content you share.. Would you ever consider to make money on that content again, if you could?

On Steemit for instance, you share content and you can get paid for doing so.. And I know about at least one famous blogger/freelancer/entrepreneur/investor that are making thousands of dollars each month, by sharing his website content on Steemit.

Would you do the same if you could?

To me, it's a bit "unethical". I mean, this person could easily just re-write some of his content and then publish it.. - But instead of doing that, it seems like he's using a bot or something similar, that makes him auto-post his website content on Steemit.

So, long story short. Would you do the same thing to earn easy money using the exact same content twice?

I tried to signup for steemit, but they require you to use a mobile phone. I do not have a mobile phone, so therefore I can not signup.. ah well. I wanted to see how people were sharing their content, and the features before I was to reply to this discussion so I have to take another turn with my response. So this person is sharing their website posts, and is getting paid for duplicate content. I think if you want to share your website posts and can get paid for doing so, then by all means go for it. Could it result in negative SEO? Possibly. Just got to be smart about it. Would I do it? Probably not.

I know that some websites accept the same article from writers but in exchange they pay a lower fee but is the person penalized for duplicate content on the main site?
If the person used an affiliate link on the original website and the same on steemit, is it bad as well??

Well I started cross posting some of my articles from my website to Medium and apparently that does not have a negative affect on your SEO since it is done through a plugin and makes use of canonical links. I have yet to see whether this has had a good or bad effect on my website.

I think though that the big there is that we are all trying to make some money, I guess there is nothing wrong with cross posting content you have already written to another website if you are going to be paid for it.

Although doesn't that go against the Steemit rules? I thought posts had to be original content there?

You are correct Lynne. All content on Steemit should be "steemit original", hence, unique and original. That being said, the system is what some would call "flawed", as you can basically post whatever you want to, and still get paid, as long as other people vote on your content.

And, I would have to correct myself from my previous statement. I wouldn't call this unethical or wrong actually, but I still think it's "bad" so to speak. Especially when it's from a person who could live without the payments from Steemit with ease.

Yeah that's exactly what I thought. I don't think breaking the rules and posting duplicate content and being paid for it is right at all. Then again maybe Steemit need to look at how they are running things. If they are paying people for duplicate content which is against the rules then surely there is a serious flaw in their system?

Well, I don't agree with cheating a system for personal gain. If you feel your content or service is worth twice or thrice its intended price, then find a medium that allows reselling such legally. For written contents, check the option of publishing them on Amazon kdp. If you are into writing short informative contents, try creating a blog and use adverts from third parties to your advantage.

I have tried a few years back to sell an article that was already published by me on another site. They penalized me and banned my account. I never tried since that time and I try to be authentic in all my articles, and when I am out of subject I'm using my imagination!

I wouldn't risk it specially if the site's rules disallow posting of duplicate content. In fact, if I care about the site, I may even take time to report someone who's doing something like that as it will likely hurt the site eventually. There are valid ways to profit from one's content multiple times including rewriting, updating, and injecting a new twist into them. I've written several e-books on one subject matter but none of them are ever the same. They may use the same main research work but each version is distinct and contains the latest updates on the subject, if any.

Well,for. me if the site wouldn't penalized me for that then I don't see any issue with that .I think there's any thing unethical about that. For the mere fact it not a copied content, then I can share it wherever it is. permitted to make money.

As you said that you think it may be unethical then I don’t think it is proper to re-use your content which was already paid. Just to be safe, my suggestion is to re-write the same content in the same context but in a different paraphrasing so it will appear to be a different article in its entirety. Re-using a part of the original content may be tantamount to plagiarism although it is also yours. But still, it is better safe than to be sorry.
