As a web business can you "go green" and what are some ways of going green?

It seems more and more brick-and-mortar businesses are "going green" these days. That can be in many different ways from only buying and using natural cleaning chemicals that their cleaners use, to buying recycled paper for their printers and using recycling printer ink cartridges or using recycled packaging. Along with many other ways to go green.

And it seems businesses are doing this to win people over by showing they they care about the environment/planet by going green. And not only does it score you some points with your potential clients/customers, but it can also save you a lot of money as well.

I was looking up some ways in which businesses can go green. Such as this article on the Forbes site 10 Ways to Green Your Business and Save Money. This can range from switching to post-consumer waste like skipping using paper altogether or using eco-friendly paper if you have to. To using biodegradable cleaning products for their offices. To using compact-fluorescent (CFL) or LED lights, replacing outdated appliances that aren't energy efficient, to getting an energy audit and making small changes around the office. To just turning things off at the end of the day from the wall and not leaving things on stand-by. To using public transport instead of driving or using a hybrid car. Or even purchasing green web hosting.

Green web hosts are web hosts that do things like use renewable energy or take part in schemes like tree planting and other things that are kind to the environment like using servers that are located in places that are energy efficient or don't use fossil fuels to power them. They don't cost much more than standard hosting either.

But if your business is mainly or even solely an online business only. What other ways are there for your online web business to go green today?

As a web based business I mean.

Thanks!

I see a lot of website hosting companies with little advertisements or banners that say "Wer'e Green!". I think it's a marketing gimmick so that the consumer feels comfortable with using them as their provider if they are extremely concerned about the planet they live on. Some website hosting companies say they are "green" but they are actually not green. So you have to be discerning about which website hosting you choose from.

Now, as for the hybrid, or electric cars, I want one. I think gas prices are outragious, even if they are about $2.10 USD per gallen where I live. I do not want to pay $2.10 USD per gallon of gas! So maybe I will spend less with a hybrid or electric car..

Everett I really think you are right on that. I am sure loads of companies claim to be green simply because it is the next "in thing" or should we say the RIGHT thing to do.

That’s also what I think with the term “green” that is being used by businesses just to give an impression that they are after the environment. I have seen one blurb of a hosting provider that they are green hosting. I really wonder what the meant. And when I was able to dig deeper the explanation was their servers use clean energy that is either solar or hydroelectric. By golly, can you believe that?

What a brilliant topic Mike. Have you seen how much paper some businesses go through? I think one of the biggest ways to go green for any business is to go paperless. Seriously why does anyone need any paper anymore?

Computer equipment can be recycled - you could donate all your old bits and bobs to a community project. I've seen that there are always community projects looking for old computers and equipment. Things that we would never consider using anymore and are completely useless to us are like gold to others.

If you do use a printer have your cartridges refilled instead of buying new ones, all that plastic has to pile up right?

If you are a homeowner or landlord, you can use a Green Homes Grant voucher to cover the cost of installing energy-efficient improvements to your home. The grant will help make your homes in Canada more energy efficient, create new jobs across Canada for energy consultants, expand our domestic clean supply chain and fight climate change. More information about that you can find here: https://buildmart.ca/grant/

I think that a very important aspect of running a business is having a properly configured website. You can significantly increase your sales just by adding chat to website. So you can be in touch with your customers 24/7. What do you think about this?
