Can you really make money selling photos online?

I've been thinking about all the different ways I can make money online and I want to know what everyone here thinks of selling photos online to make money.

Has anyone here ever sold photos online and made money? Where did you sell your photos and how much can you earn per photo or does the amount vary greatly per site?

I know I will have to get a good camera and spend quite a bit of effort taking really good quality photos. Getting into photography has always been something I have been interested in, so it would be more like pursuing a hobby and monetizing it.

I actually made a topic on this subject Lynne, I believe it was on Listing Docks, anyway for a long time now I contemplating into buying a good DSLR camera and try my luck in the photo industry, especially stock photography but I would also like to do wedding photography or other ceremonial related photography.

The only problem is: Good cameras are expensive and the additional equipment you need are even more expensive and they get devalued FAST because the technology is wildly evolving.

Yes good cameras are expensive, but surely you could start off with a middle of the range camera to start and then when you start making some money upgrade to something much better?

Well yes, but think about it, you are going to compete with professionals that already know their way around and have high-quality equipment. I would buy a mid range camera just to learn but I have doubts I will ever recover that money by selling photos online.

True, but I need a good camera soon anyway for some things I want to get done for my mommy blog. I will have so many uses for a great camera! Plus my hubby wants to take pictures that means he will get out of the house a bit and out from under my feet LOL

Selling photos is definitely a way to earn. There are many sites that are based on the photo exchange programs . They are interaction based sites where people like and comment on each others photographs. Though the earnings are dependant on the time spent on the site some people are able to make multiple payouts every month.

I heard about an android app named, Foap. I checked a review about it. Photos sold there cost $10. It's fixed. They give you $5 for each picture you sold. The other $5 goes to the company. It's legit but not reliable for a regular source of income. It has been said that you have to upload thousands of high quality pictures for more chances of increasing sales. Competition is also tough there. I think the app will most likely be a good source of extra income for passionate photographers.

There are sites that I heard about that are all about selling photos online but I did not have some time with them to see how it really works there. Will let you know my findings later.

I am a hobbyist photographer, however, until now I have not been able to sell a single photo. My photo stories published online have made money for me, but my photos do not have buyers yet. However, I have friends who are earning quite well-selling photographs online. They are selling photographs in two different marketplaces:
stock photography website
Digital marketplace
On these websites, the photographer will earn when someone downloads the picture. Good thing is you can set your own price.
The site I can refer is Fine Art America. Here you can sell your photos in various formats.
