If you had to interview a freelancer - what questions would you ask and why?

Hello all! Freelancers, WAHM's or WAHD's. Anyone that works online in any way. Anyone that knows about freelancing, whether they are a freelancer or not.

I'm doing a bit of research for a post I'm working on. Basically it will be an interview of sorts with a series of questions you can answer. Sort of similar to that The Say What You Are Game Thread which went down like a ton of bricks! lol No, it's just that it's got buried under new posts and isn't on the homepage anymore. That could be an awesome thread if more people posted in it. I'd love to see at least 100 freelancers on here posting in that thread. Perhaps Bev could pin it for a while or something but yeah.

Anyway, to help with a post that I'm working on, I'd like to reach out to the community here and ask you a question, which will help in the building an interview process.

So then, basically, if you had to interview a freelancer, what questions would you ask them and why? I'm not talking about if you was a buyer from a buyers perspective so much as just say, you had to share a room with a Freelancer for an hour, or you was sat on the train with one during your commute to work or something.

Say you bumped into someone or met someone through a friend who was a very successful freelancer on SEOClerks or something. And you only had one opportunity for say, the next 10-20 minutes to ask them as many questions as you wanted.

So if possible, just take a moment to think about this and picture the scenario.

As a freelancer yourself, or even as someone who's heard and knows that freelancing is good for those that do it, what sort of questions would you ask them and why?

What questions would you ask first and why?

What sort of things would you like to know?

Hey Mike, I hope that this will be a huge thread with tons of contributions. It's a great initiative!

If I never met the freelancer and never heard about him before, more than that "he's an awesome freelancer", then the first things I'd ask would be about their business. What kind of services they provide and how much they charge for them. Secondly, I'd probably ask for how long they've been freelancing and I would also like to know how they finally came up with the idea of doing what they do. I would like to hear their road to success but without the glory and the fame so to speak. I would like to know the real, dark and terrifying truth. I would love to hear about their mistakes they did along the way.

After that I'd probably also want to know if they operate alone of if the freelancer have a team of people they're working with. A team they've either hired or if they outsource work and how they came to that conclusion.

That's basically it. At least for now. I see myself as rather experienced and I do believe that I have more or less the "answers" for things I need to know to run my business as it is, but I'd definitely take the chance to find out more about such a freelancer as I would love to expand my business or to implement things into my business to run it even more smoothly or to reach higher grounds.

I'm looking forward to other replies. Thank you Mike!

This is a great idea Mike, oh and I loved that The Say What You Are Thread, it really helped me to get to know everyone here a little better which is awesome.

Ok so what would I ask a freelancer and why.

The first thing I would want to know is why he got into freelancing. Was it something he always wanted to do and set out to follow a passion or was it something that just happened or perhaps he was looking for any way to make money and stumbled upon freelancing?

The second thing I would like to know is how long he has been freelancing.

Then I would also ask what are his strengths and weaknesses. Like Andre I would also like to know what mistakes he has made and why, and how did he correct these things. You can learn a lot from mistakes!

I actually want to publish some Q&A posts here on DC regarding top sellers and their "secrets" for success. Hopefully, my first post live sometimes this week.

As for questions interviewing a freelancer I would ask the following:

1. For how long are you freelancing and how have you first started doing this?
2. How do you get your clients, what methods do you use to hook them?
3. What freelance marketplaces are you using on a daily basis and where have you had your biggest revenues from?
4. What kind of services do you offer and why?
5. What are some good future freelance services that aren't popular now but may be in the future?

Cheers.

Oh those are some great questions Cristian! I would also love to know the answers that BarryInSiam and some other power sellers give to those questions!

I would be interested to learn more about the types of services he offers and why. I would also ask how long he has been working as a freelancer, and whether he is earning all of his income from freelancing, or whether he retained another job too. It would be interesting to learn where he has been working over the years, and if he works on his own or has set up a team.

My first 2 questions for a freelancer who is most likely a successful veteran would be the main line of his work and the amount of earnings. It is important to know how much he is earning because what good is it to know if the freelancer is earning just coins. Anyway, I am a veteran freelancer although not full time in my work and I am preparing myself because in the years to come I may be a full time freelancer.
