Do you think that you as a freelancer possess the skills to negotiate better prices?

I've worked as a salesmen for a few years and I've had a few different job titles.. During that time I obviously learned a few things along the way. Negotiation skills and persuasion skills etc.

That being said, whenever I get a new phone, internet connection or things like that, I never bother with the salesperson and I never fall for their current "offer".

I always try to lead the conversation myself, just to avoid pitfalls and signing up for things I don't want. That basically means, that I sell the product myself, for them, just so I end up being satisfied. - Are you doing things like this too?

Take my phone for instance. I pay 195 SEK per month and I have 6 GB data. That's $21,95 per month. And I call or text as much as I want too.

The original cost for this is about $28,09, but I got myself a better deal.. However, I don't usually do this whenever I buy things on a marketplace like SEOClerks, but whenever I sign up for a subscription, a new phone or things like that, I can't help to increase my chances of getting more for less so to speak.

So, do I do these things because I'm a freelancer, or because I've been a salesman previously? How about you?

I understand what you mean. In your case, your past experience as a salesperson helped you to know how to go about negotiating. I believe that every experience teaches us something. I acquired writing skills from various roles i had before. I also learnt how to deal with clients due to having some experience in sales too. These jobs helped me to become who I am now, and also enabled me to become more experienced, and more knowledgeable in general on how to deal with people, both in terms of prices as well as quality assurance, such as the need to stick to deadlines, being competitive etc.

You phone bills costs a lot from my perspective. I pay around $30 for home internet connection, HD cable TV connection, unlimited phone calls for 2 smartphones + unlimited internet access from those phones.

I also managed to get myself a better deal, the original price was around 50 bucks, it was still a great deal but I managed to get a better one just because I pointed out I already subscribed for years to their home Internet connection and cable TV so they made me an overal package offer for smartphones too.

Oh my gosh you guys are all paying such a little for phones and internet. Here in South Africa internet and phones are very expensive and the connections very slow!

Service here sucks, compliments of being in a third world country.

That said I have excellent negotiation skills when it comes to prices, complements of working for my father as the buyer for his geotechnical engineering firm. I loved the negotiating and I was good at it. There are a lot of aspects of that job that I really miss. Being there at 8h30am every day was not one of them Do you think that you as a freelancer possess the skills to negotiate better prices?

I think so. I have been writing articles online and offline since 10 years. I have published print books as well as digital books. I have sold contents to clients. I have more than 1000 articles online and offline. Therefore, I believe I am in a better position to negotitate. My experience and skills give me a better position for bargaining better price.

In my offline business when I was younger, one of my best skills was to negotiate with the price. I was the seller and the frugal buyer would be haggling with me. I end up the winner almost always because I use my friendly demeanor as if I am treating them as a close friend. It’s hard to explain but it works all the time. But with my freelancing I have never tried that skill yet because I know that there is a lot of competition around and the client can just look for someone else if I will haggle with the price of my service.
