In my years of learning and implementing SEO I've been approached by plenty of companies that needed help with all of their optimization needs. They didn't want to pay me on a month to month basis to increase their rankings, they just wanted me to do some consulting for them. I was all for it because all I had to do was hang out with them at their office or talk with them over the phone and tell them what to do or answer any questions they had
But I'm not posting this to talk about what I've done as a consultant for companies. I want to talk about how someone can become a consultant for businesses and get paid good money for it. And by "good money" I'm talking about a few hundred an hour
The first step would most definitely be that you MUST know what you're talking about. If you just want to be a consultant because you can make a good amount of money and you don't know what you're talking about, you could probably obtain a law suit from the company you're "consulting" for if you mess everything up lol. Get out there and read everything you can. Don't fall for any scams and read the popular marketing forums and even here on the SeoClerks discussion section
Set up a few websites and use them for testing purposes. If you obtain a penalty on one of the websites, don't worry. You'll need to figure out how to get out of a penalty and first hand work is the best way to figure out how to do this You can even monetize all the websites you set up so that you can make some side cash while you're teaching yourself
After you get the knowledge of SEO and online marketing you can now start acquiring clients. This is not an easy thing to do, but it can be done. I've noticed that a lot of my consulting clients have come from LinkedIn and they usually contact me first. When they contact me for consulting I know I already sold them, which is very nice
Be sure to optimize your LinkedIn profile so that the person already wants to pay you for your time.
With SEO consulting I've seen people charge up to $1,000 an hour with a minimum of 5 hours of work. Now they don't get many clients, but they have other projects bringing in money so they don't make consulting their primary income source. Normally you can get a company to hire you for consulting and get them to pay $150 to $300 an hour. You can quote them for $300 an hour for 5 hours and something like $200 an hour for 10+ hours. You'll need to make sure they sign a contract for the job otherwise they can back out and not pay you when everything is done. Protect your own @$$ and don't work for free
