How do you become an SEO consultant?

In my years of learning and implementing SEO I've been approached by plenty of companies that needed help with all of their optimization needs. They didn't want to pay me on a month to month basis to increase their rankings, they just wanted me to do some consulting for them. I was all for it because all I had to do was hang out with them at their office or talk with them over the phone and tell them what to do or answer any questions they had How do you become an SEO consultant?

But I'm not posting this to talk about what I've done as a consultant for companies. I want to talk about how someone can become a consultant for businesses and get paid good money for it. And by "good money" I'm talking about a few hundred an hour How do you become an SEO consultant?

The first step would most definitely be that you MUST know what you're talking about. If you just want to be a consultant because you can make a good amount of money and you don't know what you're talking about, you could probably obtain a law suit from the company you're "consulting" for if you mess everything up lol. Get out there and read everything you can. Don't fall for any scams and read the popular marketing forums and even here on the SeoClerks discussion section How do you become an SEO consultant?

Set up a few websites and use them for testing purposes. If you obtain a penalty on one of the websites, don't worry. You'll need to figure out how to get out of a penalty and first hand work is the best way to figure out how to do this How do you become an SEO consultant? You can even monetize all the websites you set up so that you can make some side cash while you're teaching yourself How do you become an SEO consultant?

After you get the knowledge of SEO and online marketing you can now start acquiring clients. This is not an easy thing to do, but it can be done. I've noticed that a lot of my consulting clients have come from LinkedIn and they usually contact me first. When they contact me for consulting I know I already sold them, which is very nice How do you become an SEO consultant?

Be sure to optimize your LinkedIn profile so that the person already wants to pay you for your time.

With SEO consulting I've seen people charge up to $1,000 an hour with a minimum of 5 hours of work. Now they don't get many clients, but they have other projects bringing in money so they don't make consulting their primary income source. Normally you can get a company to hire you for consulting and get them to pay $150 to $300 an hour. You can quote them for $300 an hour for 5 hours and something like $200 an hour for 10+ hours. You'll need to make sure they sign a contract for the job otherwise they can back out and not pay you when everything is done. Protect your own @$$ and don't work for free How do you become an SEO consultant?

I love this this is awesome i wish i could make 300 an hour that is lawyer money. You are 100% correct about getting everything in writing aswell maybe ask for 30% upfront and the rest when the job is done? I wish you went into a but more detail though explaining more on how to get into this and how to get started. I am currently looking for new ways to make money and further diversify my income and i am a fast learner how much would it cost for you to teach me how to do this? Thank you for any feedback you can give and also your discussion is awesome i appreciate that aswell. look forward to hearing from you boss, Have a Nice Day!

I would love to do SEO consulting work, I think I have a decent amount of SEO experience under my belt and I'm not afraid of anything except programming questions, but even with those, I'm sure I can pull a detailed explanation that can actually help my customers.

Did few consulting gigs, most people I interact with want just services, but there is definitely a huge market out there waiting to be tapped. LinkedIn is a good way to start, I have a good profile and everything. But how should I approach this? Message people link crazy?

Great topic Razzy. Maybe I am selling myself short them? I have had a number of people I know contact me and ask me for help with their online businesses or they want to start one and want me to guide them.

I usually just take a look and give them some advice and then recommend some of the tools and services I use. I give them my affiliate links of course so it is not all for free but I never thought of charging them for my time. The people that have contacted me have been mostly friends so I don't want to bill them for my time.

My husband is an IT consultant for many years now. And his position was the result of his long work with the IT industry. In other words, he is very knowledgeable in technical work. But for me, I don’t think I will have the confidence to work as a consultant because I am not really strong when it comes to technical work. My job in the office is more on the management and operation.

I read an article in fast company that was teaching people to fake it till you make it as a consultant. It recommended that you learn one area of the niche you are consulting in really well. All that you need to do is keep referring to that area, every time you talk to a prospective and when you get the job you learn on it. I agree with this because you will have all the time to learn. I have gotten a job where I knew nothing and learned on the job. Experience can be overrated.
