I have heard that targeting similar keywords but on different pages can be detrimental to your rankings so I need some guidance here.
I run a baby competition every month on my blog so I post when a new competition is up, then I post the top 20 in the competition, a week later the top 10 and then the last week I post the winner. This is 4 posts a month with the word "baby competition" in it.
Is this going to have a negative effect on my website and if so how can I work around it?
I don't target the keyword "baby competition" on its own at all. I target "baby competition september 2016" then "top 20 baby competition september 2016" etc.
Please advise!

Google will see you as incapable of providing everything a user needs in a single piece of content. If you talk about baby competitions in general, well yeah, maybe have a page for this. But if the content is very related and basically you are saying the same thing on both pages, don't don it! It will actually hurt your SEO. Google will see you as incapable of providing everything a user needs in a single piece of content.
