10 Weird and Whacky Ways to Make Money: Rent Out Your Garden

So if you've been following along with my 10 Weird and Whacky Ways to Make Money so far, you'd see we've had being a professional beer drinker, being a professional food taster, selling your hair, being a human test subject and getting paid to sleep!

Talking of getting paid to sleep. How about getting paid to let people sleep in your garden!? This way of making money involves renting your garden out to people!

If you're fortunate enough to live in a large rural area or near where activities like fetes, shows, festivals etc take place, or you have a large back garden or area of grassland that you own such as a small secluded field or something. Then you can turn that green into cash by renting out your lawn or field to campers!

How to rent out your garden space to happy campers?

AirBNB is a website that lets you register your back garden or lawn for camping in. Holiday makers or even people attending festivals and things in your area can then book your garden or lawn to camp in for a period of time. It doesn't cost anything to list your garden for camping in with AirBNB, and you can price your garden for as much as you want. All you pay is a 3% commission to AirBNB on whatever you charge.

You'll have to follow their "good hosting guide" and make sure you are a good host. These campers will leave reviews on your hosting and camping grounds. So it's sort of like getting good reviews for hotels and b&b's etc on Yelp etc if you want people to come back again and want new people to come and camp out in your garden!

Whether it's just for the weekend, a few days, a whole week or longer! You can rent out your back garden, lawn or other grassy area to campers and holiday makers.

How is the price determined?

The total price of a reservation on Airbnb is based on a few factors. Note that the price is charged in full once a host accepts your reservation request (or if you use Instant Book).

Costs determined by the host:

  • Nightly price: Nightly rate decided by the host. This could be a one-off fee from around $20-50 depending on how nice your garden is!
  • Cleaning fee: One-time fee charged by some hosts to cover the cost of cleaning their space. Some campers can leave a mess!
  • Extra guest fees: One-time fee charged by some hosts to cover other costs related to using their space. Such as outhouses, pools etc.

Feel like renting out your garden to make some money from?

Just register it on Airbnb and people can contact you to do just that! 10 Weird and Whacky Ways to Make Money: Rent Out Your Garden

No way! I would never let strange people into my garden, first of all I don't have a huge yard and second I just started to make it beautiful, by planting trees, taking care of the grass, constructing a garden house and things like that.

I think my new garden will be pretty much completed at the start of the next summer, looking forward relaxing in that garden when it's all set and done.
Anyways, the idea is not bad, you just have to be desperate enough to rent such an intimate place.

This is definitely a good way to make some money but I don't quite like the idea of renting my garden. This is the place where I can actually relax. If I was to rent my garden I will have to get rid of my lovely flowers, fruits and vegetables. This is something that I don't want to do. Furthermore gardening is my hobby and if I can't practice it I will feel that something is amiss. I can't risk my happiness for some money.

OMG well I don't have a garden and even if I did I am not sure I would want people wandering around my garden LOL.

Anyway when I was living at home, it must have been when I was about 12 or 13 we were contacted by a film company that wanted to use our garden for a movie scene. It was quite exciting!

We had a two acre property on a small holding and they were there for 2 days. They set up a huge tent and there was a lot of activity going on for a while. I just remember that they let me and my sisters sit there and watch, plus they let us eat the food and there was loads of it.

This is indeed a wacky idea for earning money but it can be likened to mountain resorts that we go to. It is just a plain vast grassy area with some facilities like toilet and bathroom and barbecue stand. Bring your own tent or rent from them. Maybe a small garden with that kind of accommodation for a camping trip is also attractive to campers like us especially if it is near or within the city. In fact, if we have a big garden then maybe we can cultivate that idea.

I can see how this would bring in money if you have a lovely garden. I don't have a garden but even if I did, it's not something I would do. I thought I heard a report about AirBNB or a similar company that people were using for short-term rentals and the major hotels were up in arms about it. They were trying to stop it. It's the typical David and Goliath scenario. I hope the hotels lose the battle. Big Business is always trying to squash the little guy.

It really depends on the accommodations that I can provide and the people are willing to pay for such accommodations. I'm not really keen on renting our garden out to peopl. There's a lot of factors involve including safety and security, what I'm saying it's not that simple.
