As a lot of you here know already, I run a full service online marketing company and love what I do I'm going to give a few tips you should follow, even if you're in a different niche
I'm sure a lot of you have had clients that just annoy the hell out of you and you wish they would just go away, but that means they would take their payments with them lol.
I've got a few big clients that I work with and I rarely talk to them unless it's the end of their monthly campaign and it's time to go over what we've done with their website.
The problem with small fish clients is that they are risking their money to pay you for your services. I charge a minimum of $550 a month for my services and that's actually pretty cheap for a full service SEO and Marketing campaign. The downside is that new business owners with websites will sign up with me and then complain that they aren't ranked #1 in two weeks. Before they sign up I tell them it can take up to 6 months to achieve #1 rankings for their niche since they are a brand new website and I can't push them too hard. They understand in the beginning and sign the contract, but when they don't get sales immediately after the ink is dry they begin to complain. They are complaining because they are risking the money on SEO and Marketing when, in all honesty, the funds should be used somewhere else to bring in immediate sales.
When I'm working with a big fish I'll usually talk to the owner of the company or the director and we'll go over what's going to be done and how long it will be before they can expect to see a positive ROI. The bigger fish know that my services will take a while because I tell them right at the start. They also have a good amount of funding and can afford to invest $1,000 - $5,000 a month on an SEO and Online Marketing campaign.
So in the end, I have less headaches with bigger fish because they aren't putting their business at risk just to get a sale. Smaller companies who can't really afford the $550+ a month are putting themselves at risk and they begin to show their frustration when they realize I wasn't just saying that the sales could take up to 6 months to come in just because I wasn't sure of the timing
Big Fish = Less Headaches
Small Fish = Risk Takers (sometimes)

I guess the smaller companies had to fork out all the money and then wait about a month for their order to be made and arrive with them before they could start making sales and make their money back.
I had to work my company this way though with all money upfront and a no returns policy because I made bulk baby clothing up to order and I was not going to let people order and then I purchase the fabric, have it cut and sewn up just to have someone cancel their order or not pay the rest!
The bigger companies I hardly ever even spoke to. They just placed their order and paid online, I made it up and couriered it to them and that was the end of it. I did sometimes call them just to keep customer relations sweet. Great tips here Razzy and I know what you mean. I also had some small fish customers and some bigger fish companies that I dealt with. In general I had less problems with the bigger companies and I think it was exactly what you are referring to. They had less money and when they ordered from me they knew orders would take about 3 weeks but from 2 weeks they would call and ask for their orders.
