How to get more comments on your blog posts?

Having a blog comes with a lot of different perks and benefits. Whether it's a personal blog or a business blog. But sometimes you can spend a lot of time writing a great quality post or articles for it but get no comments on it and that can be almost heart breaking!

Why is it that some blog posts you make don't get comments despite the content being top notch content and the blog getting a lot of readers?

What does it mean when you don't get any comments on your blog?

Does it mean that your content sucks and nobody likes it?

Does it mean that you're doing something major wrong?

How can you get more comments on your blog posts?

Thanks!

This is a brilliant question Mike and I think there are so many answers to this question. The way you write can have a lot to do with it. The content can be top notch but not written in a way that encourages readers to share their thoughts at all.

I have personally found that asking a question at the end of my post and inviting my readers to share their opinions helps to encourage them to leave a comment.

Then I have found the content I have created that has caused an upset always generates comments, when people are angry and disagree with what I have written I have no problems getting comments.

As you and Lynne have already touched upon, the comment system is a big factor. If you use something that requires no registration, you make it easier for anyone to comment (especially if no email is required), but you also increase the likely hood of getting spam, and decrease the likely hood of back-and-forth discussion in the comments. If you use an external comment system, only people who favor that system, and are comfortable using it on your site, will comment. So, sometimes a lack of comments is just because people aren't able to. I often read things that use Disqus comments, but I have no Disqus account, so I'm unable to leave a comment. Same goes for the Facebook plugin.

If you post a few fake comments it may help get the ball rolling. People are social creatures, if they see other people interested in something they are much more likely to be interested in it too. The comments should be interesting though so users are enticed to post replies.

As Lynne already mentioned, asking a question can be a great way to leave off, because sometimes people just can't think of anything to write in a comment. Asking a question takes the pressure off. I would add, that if someone gives a good response, I think it's good to acknowledge it by replying back.

Yes you have made an excellent point there, if you get comments on your website I believe that it is essential to reply to each and every one. This shows your readers that you do actually want their comments and that you engage back with them. Plus it is also just silly not to reply, this lengthens your content, it updates your content and it gives you an amazing opportunity to add new keywords and add in more links and information that you wouldn't have had the chance to previously.

If you don't get any comments some of the following may be true:
  • You don't get enough traffic
  • People find your content boring so they bounce right from the very beginning of the article
  • You are talking about a very touchy subject nobody want to give its opinion on
  • You are talking about a very serious subject with some very good points and people are afraid of commenting not to sound stupid
  • People just hate you and don't want to acknowledge you by commenting
  • You information is very useful, people read it all the way, but as soon as they have the answer they just split, no point in leaving a comment.

That's pretty much all that I could think off at the moment.

If you want to generate comments on your blog organically, your contents must be useful and interesting. You can also share your content on social media to generate comments. If tour marketing and promotion campaign is not working, you can join post exchange boards and forums where you generate one comment for one comment you post on member's blog. You can also join blog/forum post groups where you pay the members for commenting on your blogs.

This was one major problem I had when it came to blogging, the issue of generating comments, I studied my readers and came up with some measures and it worked.

Write more on controversial issues that would make people respond
Start a debating topic, to get people debating on the topic.
Bring up some argument, so that people can talk about
Write your post in a way that begs for answers and provokes one to respond
Write on topics readers can easily relate and connect to.
Let most of your post revolved arounds the readers.

Getting comments largely depends on the kind of readers that you have for your blog. Most readers I know are the silent type that doesn’t lift a finger to write a comment. I have seen that in Facebook when I post something, I get 50 likes and 5 comments. But in reality, 100 have read my post. For a blog to get more comments maybe you need some friends to post comments on your blog so that that silent type of readers will be motivated to post their own comment. Or maybe you need to make your blog more engaging like asking a question in the end so there is the need for the reader to react.
