Whenever I'm doing my onpage optimization I will try to stay within the limits set by Google because they're the main search engine everyone should be targeting. If I write out my title and descriptions and they are slightly over the limit, I will make sure that my keywords are not near the end so I don't have to worry about them getting cut off.

It's not really proven that if your keyword is cut off by the search results if you get knocked in the rankings, but I always try to play it safe whether it's my own site, a friends or a clients How important are exact characters for meta descriptions and titles? Better safe than sorry, right?

Another thing about titles and descriptions. Make sure you get a keyword in there, like I already mentioned. Get at least 1 keyword in the title and 2 in the description. The difficult thing is to get your keywords into the description and make it legible. If the search engines find out that you're writing in order to get increased rankings and not to please your readers, you'll get knocked in the SERPs (search engine results pages). No one wants this, so try to write it as if you were typing to a friend or colleague.

In the end, don't be too worried about a long title or description. If you go over a little bit it's not a bad thing. Just remember to get your keyword into the title once and into the description at least twice. And make it easy to read, not a jumble of keywords that looks like a robot wrote lol How important are exact characters for meta descriptions and titles?

Yes I also try and stay within the exact limits too.

I agree with you 100% Razzy on making it readable because that is not only what Google sees, it must also be appealing for the people searching to click on!

Making sure that you are within the limits is the best option since you want to make sure that they appear properly in search results. You need to consider what you are going to write in the meta title and description as this is one of the first things people will be seeing, and so they play an important role in encouraging people to click. So, try to come up with several relevant keywords that can be included properly within those limits. Choose wisely and plan it properly.
