Does the domain extension .us stand for United States just like the .co.uk one is for the United Kingdom? If, can someone please tell me what it means? Thanks.

So you think it would be ok for a SEO Clerks Affiliate Store?

Sure, why not. If you feel comfortable using the .us extension you should go for it. I don't think a .com site will rank any higher than a .us site, it all depends on the SEO work you put into the site. Plus marketing and promotion will get you a lot of direct traffic. So .us TLD won't be a real disadvantage.

According to wiki, the .us is for United States, though most people here have opted for .com TLD.
.us is the Internetcountry codetop-level domain (ccTLD) for the United States and was established in 1985. Registrants of .us domains must be United States citizens, residents, or organizations, or a foreign entity with a presence in the United States. Most registrants in the country have registered for .com, .net,.org and other gTLDs, instead of .us, which has primarily been used by state and local governments despite any entity having the option of registering a .us domain.
