You will want to know how many times a keyword is searched monthly and what type of competition you will face with that keyword. For instance, you have a much better chance ranking for a keyword that ony has 40,000 searches monthly with a dozen sites ranking than you would with a keyword that gets 1 million searches monthly but has 3 million competing sites.

I have to agree that your keyword has a greater chance of being noticed when the keyword is not very common. As in your example, it is obvious that a keyword with a big number of competing website will have to hurdle so many steps to get noticed. However, the problem now is how to choose the right keyword which has lesser competing websites? How do you check for a keyword’s number of searches? And also, how would you know the number of competing websites for a particular keyword?

The keyword should be low competitive with high searches, it should have business value, it should be related to your business.

If you are looking for the best keyword for your site, you should find root keyword then make a long tail or phrasal keyword then check its global monthly searches and its competition and suggestions.
