Discounting is for dummies

Here's why you should never discount your products or services. Sure it gives you a temporary sales spike, but once you train your customers to expect a discounted service, they won't buy without it. Also, discounts erode your brand value, making your customers see your products as cheap.

So what can you do when offering freelance services? Check out this video from founder of Social Triggers.

Thank you for the interesting watch.
I find this opens up a little bit of controversial discussion.

Though the idea makes perfect sense (there's no doubt about that), but this site, mainly has services for discount, or services under $5, not all of them, but the majority.

The saying "time is money" is relevant in this video, however...
You put your service on special, increasing your revenue, making you busy busy busy.
Since the buyer isn't paying full price, are you being paid the rightful amount for your time spent throughout the day you're working your tail off?

If you don't have your listing at a discount, however you're offering "free merchandise", are you still being paid for your time spent. He kind of contradicts himself. In saying that, it's also coming from a Seller and Buyer perspective, as I am both.

I can see how this comment, "discounting is for dummies" would be offensive or controversial for some people. But, there is a huge difference between offering cheap services and discounting high quality services that are usually priced more. Many of the cheap services are not actually worth a lot of money. So when they are marked down, it's just a tactic to get more sales.

If you train them to expect a discounted service, then they will always want that from you. But, you can't just think that everyone will pay a full price for your service and be happy as some are already trained to want discounts by other sellers who rely on discounts as a primary marketing method.

And, cheap is a subjective thing. What's cheap for one person will be expensive for another. Also, there are very rarely any cheap services that are actually good.

If you want my time, you will have to pay for it. I don't like giving things away as it never comes to anything good. I have never convinced anyone to hire me again by cheapening the value of my services by making them free or cheap. That strategy works once and then they go elsewhere once you go back to your regular prices.

Think of all the retail stores that mark their products way up and then give huge discounts. Isn't that similar to what some are doing on sites where you sell your services? The services could be marked a regular low price but that would never attract a buyer who is already in the discount mode.
