Do blog link swaps really work for getting new readers?

I don't want to swap links for any kind of SEO benefit, but if I could get a few links back from very popular blogs then maybe it would help my traffic. Does anyone know if this is true, such as do blog link swaps (link rolls) work for new readers/traffic?

Yes, it would work for you, if you don't care about Google or search engine traffic.

It's tough when it comes to swapping links, unless you have a number of different sites or blogs. The reason why I say this, is because Google cancels out reciprocating links to other sites.

For example:
If I already have a link on your site leading to my "Y" blog, I would have to put your site link on my "B" blog, to ensure there is no reciprocation.
If both of the links share the same channel, Google would cancel them out. Which can decrease new readers.

There's nothing wrong with reciprocal links or link exchanges so long as you keep it to a minimum and it's not being done to manipulate search engine traffic. Some of these exchanges can be very positive and produce a nice flow of traffic from related blogs.

I got this advice from a veteran blogger - form a group ofbloggers to gain mutual benefits with the backlinks. Of course, the preferred is having the same theme. For example, my blog is about pets so it is beneficial to join a group of pet bloggers since our readers are in the same bracket. One reader of another blog can check on my blog for more related stories. I believe that you can get a good traffic with that method especially if your blog is of a different style than the ordinary.
