Implied forum rules

I have been on some forums that have no written rules and yet they are very orderly and friendly to hang out on. And you might think these forums have no rules but the rules are implied.

Are you in favor of clearly spelling out the rules or do you rely on your forum member's better judgement to act in a good way, even when no list is there?

You might think that it's OK not to have a list of rules but some people will just use that as an excuse to act out and misbehave. After all, they assume there are no rules since none are posted. Though I'll bet you have unmentioned rules that you are abiding by. The good members always know what these rules are without even being told.

Some forums rely on well structured written rules, while others have an informal set of unspoken rules. And, only you know which one will work best for your members.

It bothers me when some forum members pretend they can act any old way they want when there are no rules posted. Just because you don't see the rules doesn't mean there are no rules. And, there is no excuse to act stupid in public, even on a forum, whether rules are there or not. You should have self control to act like a grown up. No one needs to post rules to tell you that.

That's just an excuse that some use, but most have common sense to know better. By the way, I'm sure you know that you have to agree to a forum's rules and TOS when you sign up. There is a little page that you tick the consent box on. And, once you have agreed, they don't have to warn you again. The rules will usually be listed there.
