When a good thread goes bad

Did you ever come across the situation where a very good, productive discussion (which contained many valuable posts) turned bad or degenerated into a troll war?

This can happen on the nicest forums, even unexpectedly when members get heated and start exchanging mean words. You just need good staff to ensure the discussion can be locked or members warned so the disagreements don't rip up your forum and cause disharmony.

I agree with Sharla on this. You can always lock it for a bit and then reopen it once everyone has had time to cool down.

I have come across it on another forum I moderated and just closed the thread and let the users know what they did wrong. Discussions can get a bit too personal.

Lock it for a bit and then open it back up to see if things have cooled down a bit. If they have not then I would lock it permnamentally.

This happens to a lot of really good forum threads. And, sometimes not just with intense debates but also trivial type discussions where people get their pride hurt. A forum should be about give and take of opinions, but sometimes a member or two just wants to prove they are right and takes the issue too far. Then things get out of hand.

I had seen a thread like that where the topic is about finance. After about 20 posts, a spat arose which led to a mild flame war. The thread was later locked and was eventually deleted. No word from the admin was heard about the issue but maybe the warring parties were informed. It's really important for the mods to be vigilant so a dispute can be nipped at once.
