I do not think that is the best idea. If people still have stuff to say about the thread, then why bother closing it?

I have owned a lot of forums over the years and I have never done with nor even considered it. I don't know any forum owners who does this and cannot imagine any reason you would.
I guess there would be rare cases with specific types of threads but just in general it seems like a bad idea.

No, I don't. I tend to let a thread just keep growing unless it is an issue thread. If it is a question that has been answered about the site then I lock it but any normal and general thread then I will just let it grow. If that thread becomes an issue with the community, then I will lock it until things calm down and all sorted out.
