Biggest forum failures

What's the worst mistake you have made on your own forum; whether deleting the wrong reply to accidentally banning yourself. Talk about how you recovered.

As for myself, i seriously messed up my forum theme about two days after first install. I didn't know how to replace the theme at the time, so I just reinstalled the forum software :/

Since then, I've found it's easy to simply go in and replace the folder via FTP and that fixes everything in the theme files.

I let a friend of mine post on my forum for a few days while I was on vacation. And, he turned out to be a big troll. I should have checked his posts on a computer while on vacation, but I trusted him and did not. It cost me several really good loyal forum members who left in anger.

I didn't get enough people posting on my forum soon enough and interest died off quickly. Now I'm struggling to restart the forum with few members.

I did not have good staff members on my first forum and for that reason there was spam and trolling when I was offline and the forum failed.

What a friend. So sorry you had to endure that.

On my first forum, I relied on a few of my friends to help put up forum posts and didn't get enough real forum members and when they left my forum went inactive.

Letting posts go too long without being moderated is a huge one. If you are not going to moderate right away and there is a lot of spam on it, it does not attract as many people.

Forum spam is such a huge turn off to me. If I see it, I want to moderate and delete it. But if I'm just a guest or regular member on a forum that's not possible, so I usually just end up leaving.

I do this as well. I figure if you dont have the time to make your site look good, I dont have the time to be on it.

Let me share this experience of a childhood friend who had a forum about casino and other betting. One member had posted a style of betting that the admin disagreed. Take note that the admin is the owner. The disagreement escalated to an argument that went out of hand. In a matter of days, the forum died. Members seemed to have left except for a few who log in once in a while. But the number of posts remained at zero. Apparently, the members were turned off by the quarrelsome admin.
